    Position Details

    Job Title: Elementary Special Education Teacher

    Reports To: Building Principal(s)

    Location: Voyager Elementary School

    FLSA Status: Exempt

    Union Affiliation: Howell Education Association

    Start Date: Thursday, August 15, 2024

    Duration: Ten months; First scheduled teacher report day through last scheduled teacher report day of the school year

    Salary: Per HEA Master Agreement

    SUMMARY:

    The Elementary Special Education Teacher is responsible for fostering a positive classroom and school culture, setting high expectations for students, and utilizing effective instructional practices tailored to student learning needs. Continuous professional development and collaboration with peers are essential for improving teaching practices. The teacher will supervise students, create and deliver lessons, follow established curriculum, and maintain open communication with parents/guardians regarding student progress.

  • Evaluating student progress and using data for instructional decisions
  • Acting as a district advocate
  • Regularly communicating with stakeholders
  • Integrating cultural awareness into instruction
  • Adhering to school rules and procedures
  • Demonstrating professionalism and collegial behavior
  • Maintaining regular in-person attendance
  • Other duties as assigned
  • SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • May include supervising paraprofessional staff
  • QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Requirements: Bachelor's or higher degree, valid Michigan teacher's certificate with special education endorsement for grades K-5
  • Preferred: Educational experience
  • Alternative qualifications may be considered
  • LANGUAGE SKILLS:

  • Ability to explain teaching techniques, analyze professional journals, and present information effectively
  • Proficient in written and oral communication
  • TECHNICAL SKILLS:

  • Proficiency in integrating technology into work
  • Utilization of District technology and software
  • Competence in Microsoft Office applications
  • MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:

  • Application of math concepts relevant to the position
  • REASONING ABILITY:

  • Proficiency in problem-solving and organizational dynamics
  • Ability to handle confidential information with professionalism
  • Interpretation of instructions and data analysis
  • INTERPERSONAL SKILLS:

  • Ability to build rapport and collaborate effectively
  • Initiative, teamwork, and good communication skills
  • Effective collaboration with various stakeholders
  • PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

    Requirements: Standing, walking, manual dexterity, reaching, speaking, occasional lifting, good vision, and ability to travel to different locations. Flexible work hours and multitasking may be necessary.

    ENVIRONMENTAL ADAPTABILITY:

    Ability to work in variable noise levels, interact with diverse audiences, maintain student safety, and adapt to changing weather conditions if necessary.

    TERMS:

    Employment conditions per collective bargaining agreement; salary based on education and experience. Participation in training sessions is required.
