    General Statement of DutiesClosing Date:

    This position closes on Monday, May 20, 2024.Performs professional engineering work in the field and in the office for the Construction Division of the Department of Public Utilities; does related work as required.

    Essential DutiesThe position manages heavy civil capital improvement construction projects, private development construction projects, annual service, maintenance, and emergency response contracts and supervises construction inspectors.

    Considerable knowledge of engineering principles and practices as it relates to the assigned position and departmentGood knowledge of legal, administrative, and technical aspects of applicable local, state and federal codes and referenced standardsAbility to plan, design and prepare related estimates and specificationsAbility to prepare and review plansSound working knowledge of methods and practices used in engineering, inspection and construction of County infrastructure projects for assigned departmentAbility to make complex engineering calculationsKnowledge of environmental impacts, relevant to storm water management, and erosion control principles and practices, as applied to the construction of County infrastructure projectsAbility to create and review complex construction documents, designs and proposals for costs, design requirements and compatibility (compliance) with County standards, guides and applicable local, state and federal requirementsAbility to accurately and consistently interpret and apply complex regulations and policiesAbility to multitask and effectively manage competing prioritiesAbility to research, collect and maintain data, consider and weigh a variety of factors in making decisions or recommendationsAbility to lead, manage and partner effectivelyAbility to express ideas clearly and concisely, orally and in writing to diverse audiences of stakeholders including but not limited to County Officials, County employees at all levels, engineers, developers, contractors, landowners and citizensGood supervisory skills including the ability to effectively manage workloads, projects and to foster and maintain high morale and engagementAbility to synthesize multiple types of complex data and produce easily understood reports and other materialsBasic accounting or other financial skills with sufficient ability to monitor and manage expenditures in accordance with County Finance policies and within an approved budgetPhysical condition that permits activities including but not limited to perform assigned duties and access diverse environmental locations countywidePersonal accountability including teamwork and establishing and maintaining positive relationships with a diverse community of internal and external stakeholders, customers and colleaguesCritical thinking skills with the ability to problem solveGood knowledge of personal computers and/or automated systems having the ability to enter, maintain, retrieve and analyze dataAbility to multitask and effectively manage competing priorities and make sound decisionsMay require a flexible work schedule based on assignmentsAbility to work on own initiative without close supervision or guidanceMinimum QualificationsPossession of a four (4) year degree in a relevant recognized field of engineering from an ABET accredited engineering and two (2) years of related professional experience in engineering.

    Additional InformationPositions from this posting may be filled as an Engineer I or II depending on the qualifications of the successful applicant and the needs of the organization at the time of hire.

    Engineer I ($69, $ 127,917.

    89):

    Possession of a four (4) year degree in a relevant recognized field of engineering from an ABET accredited engineering program required and previous relevant professional experience in engineering preferred.

    Engineer II ($76, $ 140,493.

    44):

    Possession of a four (4) year degree in a relevant recognized field of engineering from an ABET accredited engineering program and two (2) years of related professional experience in engineering required.

    Water, wastewater, and/or construction engineering experience preferred.

    A criminal history record check and fingerprinting is conducted on all persons conditionally offered employment, including a conditional offer of initial employment, or a conditional offer to promote, demote, or laterally transfer an employee.

    May require possession of a valid driver's license issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia.
    May require annual audio test or other job related physical testing as required by assigned position or department.
