    Position Information
    Description & Details:

Instrumental Conducting and Music Education. Due to the retirement of Warren Olfert as Director of Bands, the North Dakota State University Challey School of Music seeks an outstanding wind/percussion conductor and music education specialist. The position is offered as a 9-month, tenure-track appointment beginning August, 2024. Depending on the strengths and experience of the applicant pool and the needs of the School of Music, the position may be offered as Assistant Professor or Associate Professor.

Duties will include conducting the NDSU Wind Symphony (the premiere seated wind/percussion ensemble) and other ensembles as assigned, teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in instrumental music education and instrumental conducting and literature, mentoring graduate students, contributing to the administration of the instrumental program, and active recruitment. Ancillary duties and teaching responsibilities will be assigned depending on specialties of the successful applicant and needs of the School of Music.

The Challey School of Music has a long-standing tradition of training musicians in performance, conducting, composition, and liberal studies at the bachelor's, master's, and doctoral levels. We specialize in the education of K-12 music teachers as well as, with our master's and doctoral degrees, the training of college and university faculty members. The Instrumental area has specialists in all typical instruments through full time faculty members and part-time adjuncts. There are several instrumental faculty members who conduct and supervise the ensembles—the NDSU Wind Symphony, the University Band, the University Symphony Orchestra, two full Jazz Ensembles and combos, the Gold Star Marching Band, pep bands, and chamber music ensembles. The NDSU Wind Symphony and Jazz Ensemble tour annually. The successful candidate will have knowledge and programming interest in both the traditional Western wind/percussion canon as well as music of diverse cultures and approaches.
