Job Summary
The University of Kentucky is seeking a full-time, regular title series, 9-month tenure-track Assistant Professor of Lighting and Sound Design to join our outstanding faculty in the UK Department of Theatre & Dance for Fall 2024. Our new colleague will serve as the resident Lighting & Sound Designer, responsible for the executed design or supervision of student designers on the department's four mainstage theatrical productions (one typically a musical), the annual dance concert, and advise student designers with a robust studio production season. Critical to this position is a practiced understanding of live performance lighting & sound design, and the ability to leverage these skills in the hands-on instruction of students and the realization of the season's productions. Candidates should demonstrate a successful record of recruitment, teaching, performance, and professional integrity. Standard teaching expectation is two courses per semester that includes teaching core courses in creativity and visualization, and both major coursework and electives in lighting & sound design, production practicum, and other topics of production interest.
The successful candidate will be expected to build a creative and research profile consistent with Department of Theatre & Dance standards, actively participate in shared governance, engage with the professional community; and establish and maintain positive relationships across the production personnel throughout the College. Projected distribution of effort would be 50% teaching, 40% creative activity/research, and 10% service.
Review of applications will begin immediately, and applications will be accepted until the position is filled.
The Department of Theatre & Dance offers the Bachelor of Arts Degrees in both Theatre and in Dance, minors in both fields, as well as a certificate in Filmmaking Production and Dramatic Writing, and a certificate in Musical Theatre. The College of Fine Arts and the Vice-President for Research have recently invested $90,000 in an LED lighting upgrade of the department's two main performance venues and are currently in the first phase of a significant sound equipment upgrade. The school is an accredited member of the National Association of Schools of Theatre.
