Basic Function
Under the supervision of the Technical Director - Production, technicians will work alongside undergraduate scene shop employees and assist with construction, painting, install, and strike of scenery.
Technicians are responsible for following scene shop safety procedures and for reinforcing them for students, as well as following standard construction and/ or scenic painting methods used to produce theatrical scenery.
This is a casual position with flexible hours and scheduled on an as needed basis.The schedule will be flexible and scheduled on an as-needed basis between August - May.
Essential Job Functions
The Scene Shop Technician will interpret scale construction drawings and paint elevations to create cut lists or paint samples.
They will collaborate with the TD of Production on leading the safe and efficient workflow in the shop by supervising and guiding student staff members, ensuring they complete all necessary tasks in a satisfactory and safe manner.
The Scene Shop Technician may be asked to fabricate scenic or properties pieces using carpentry, welding, painting, or upholstery techniques based on the strengths of the technician and needs of the production.
Technicians may also occasionally lead load-ins and strikes and ensure that stock inventory items are stored safely.Minimum Qualifications
* 1 year+ experience in the fabrication or painting of theatrical scenery.
* 4+ years experience in the fabrication of theatrical scenery, 1-2 years in supervisory role (Lead Carpenter, Paint Charge).
Physical Activity:
Significant physical activity, including repetitive hand motion, walking, bending, climbing ladders, reaching overhead, pulling/pushing, and lifting up to 50 pounds.
Noise:
There is sufficient noise to cause you to shout in order to be heard above the noise level.
Dust & Particulate:
The work environment is dusty. Disposable dust masks will be supplied as needed, respirators are not required.
Hazards:
Includes a variety of physical conditions such as proximity to machinery & tools used to perform work, electrical current, working on ladders & elevated work platforms, or exposure to chemicals.
