JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

The Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders (CSD) at the Pennsylvania State University, University Park campus, invites applications for a faculty position as an Assistant Teaching Professor of American Sign Language (ASL) Interpretation to begin August 4. This is a -week non-tenure-track, term (single year) academic appointment, funded for one year from the date of hire with a strong possibility of appointment renewal for subsequent periods.

This individual will facilitate, support, and maximize the integration and inclusion of deaf faculty and staff within the CSD Department and the College of Health and Human Development (HHD). The incumbent will work collaboratively with faculty members, facilitating seamless integration and participation of deaf individuals in academic and professional settings. The successful candidate will also contribute to the teaching mission of the CSD Department through instructional assignments for the ASL and/or Deaf Culture courses, as appropriate.

Responsibilities:

Deliver high-quality interpreting services for instructional classes, faculty meetings, professional development training, and additional HHD programming.

Uphold the highest standards of professional conduct and ethics as outlined by the National Association of the Deaf (NAD) and the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID).

Prepare thoroughly for assignments to ensure accurate interpretation of technical content and complex subject matter.

Stay abreast of developments within the interpreting profession and relevant cultural and linguistic communities.

Support the university's commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion through inclusive practices and advocacy.

Serve as a mentor to students pursuing careers in interpreting, providing guidance and support both within the university and beyond.

Other instructional duties as assigned that are consistent with the mission of the CSD Department and the HHD College.

Qualifications:

A Master's Degree in interpreting or in education or a related field from an accredited post-secondary institution is required. Two years of experience interpreting with individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing, particularly in a postsecondary setting, is preferred.

Candidate should have and maintain certification from the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) and/or National Association of the Deaf (NAD), as well as and current registration or eligible for registration with PA ODHH.
