    Job Overview

    The Senior Associate Dean for Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, & Belonging (DEIB) prioritizes, bolsters, and advances the Georgetown University School of Medicine's (GUSOM) diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging initiatives throughout the School. Reporting to the GUSOM Dean for Medical Education, they set the strategic vision for the DEIB efforts, actively engaging with students, faculty, staff, and administration to promote a diverse, equitable, and inclusive environment for all members of the School of Medicine community.

    This position is an administrative position situated within the Georgetown University School of Medicine, with option to apply for a faculty appointment within the Georgetown University Medical Center.

    Primary responsibilities are as follows:

    Strategic Planning & Implementation. Set strategic planning priorities and implementation to guide the ongoing advancement of DEIB efforts at GUSOM, in conjunction with and in preparation for the upcoming LCME accreditation review in 2027. Collaborate with students, administrators, faculty, and staff at the School of Medicine, and across the Georgetown University Medical Center and partners at MedStar Health, to develop, implement, and evaluate long-range strategic initiatives aimed at improving DEIB culture, climate, student services, and the learning environment. Align strategic planning efforts with the core mission and Jesuit service values of the university, including "Community in Diversity" and Cura Personalis (care of the whole person).

    Pathway Program Oversight. Oversee the implementation of diverse student outreach initiatives and pre-med pathway programs for K-12 (elementary, middle, high school) and undergraduate students that fulfill the diversity mission of the school and to meet the school's accreditation standards. Oversee professional enrichment opportunities for pathway program alumni upon program completion, including networking, career counseling, and graduate school preparation for up to 5 years out from program participation. Write and submit submitting grant proposals to secure independent funding for pathway work and diversity initiatives to expand program capacity for more participants, taking the programs to scale.

    As well, the Senior Associate Dean for DEIB provides overall oversight of recruitment, selection, curriculum development and quality implementation of the 6 premier pathways programs at the School of Medicine, in collaboration with the Assistant Dean for Diversity, Equity, Inclusion & Belonging and the Director of the GEMS program:

    Academy for Research, Clinical, Health Equity Scholarship (ARCHES) College Pipeline Program
    Georgetown Experimental Medical Studies Program (GEMS) 1-year Post-Baccalaureate Program
    Creating Opportunities & Realizing Excellence (CORE) Leadership Program (virtual)
    Gateway Exploration High School Program for DC Public Schools high school students
    Aspiring HoyaMed Professional Development/Speakers series (virtual)
    Summer Medical Immersion Program with the Georgetown University School of Continuing Studies

    Faculty Training & Curriculum Development for DEIB. Design and execute student, faculty, and staff development training sessions and workshops that educate on DEIB principles. Oversee Cultural Competency Journeys workshops in the medical education curriculum and support the content development work of the GUMC Bias Reduction Improvement Coaching Program (BRIC). Provide coaching and workshops on DEIB principles and approaches to student groups, faculty, and staff affiliated with Georgetown and MedStar Health.

    Campus Partnership & Collaboration. Provide leadership for the development of initiatives, policies, and procedures to support and ensure the success of underrepresented student, faculty, and staff populations. Play an active role in university and school-wide efforts that seek to cultivate a culture of belongingness and inclusion. Collaborate with student government and advocacy groups and support the Council on Diversity Affairs and the Dean's Advisory Group on DEIB. Work with the Office of Faculty & Academic Affairs, the Subcommittee on Faculty Diversity & Inclusion, the Racial Justice Committee for Change, the Working Group on Racial Justice, and the Health Equity Center Equity Forward Faculty Campaign to advance faculty development training. Collaborate closely with other senior associate deans to support the planning and implementation of First Year Orientation, including coordinating URiM events, leading student panels, and participating in discussion groups.

    Assessment, Evaluation, Data-Driven Decision Making, & Grant Applications. Collaborate closely with GU and SOM administrators to facilitate the development and implementation of ongoing assessment practices to measure, both qualitatively and quantitatively, the effectiveness of DEIB programs and cross-campus efforts that enhance student retention, persistence, graduation, and overall learning environment experience reflective of DEIB. Demonstrate ability to present data to funders and draft applications for grants and external funding.

    Work Interactions and Work Mode Designation

    Reporting to the Dean for Medical Education at the GUSOM, the Senior Associate Dean for DEIB collaborates with other senior deans in the Offices of Medical Education, Admissions & Financial Aid, Student Affairs & Student Learning, & the Dean's Office to foster an equitable and inclusive environment that aligns with GUSOM's goals of student success. Additionally, they work closely with undergraduate premedical advisors and colleagues supporting premedical and medical student success at the undergraduate and graduate levels, and collaborate with students, faculty, staff, residents, and leadership across Georgetown University and MedStar Health.

    Furthermore, the Senior Associate Dean for DEIB serves as the external liaison between local and national partners, such as DC Public Schools and charter school teachers, principals, and representatives and pre-medical advisors from colleges/universities.

    This position has been designated as Hybrid. Please note that work mode designations are regularly reviewed in order to meet the evolving needs of the University.     Requirements and Qualifications

    Master's degree required – preference for Doctorate or MD degree
    Minimum of 9 years of direct experience in the development and implementation of equity, diversity and inclusion strategies and practices
    Demonstrated knowledge and experience in strategic planning and implementation, and ability to develop vision and comprehensive plan for DEIB efforts at the school
    Knowledge of project management, presentation, public speaking, training, and facilitation methodologies; interpersonal communication and human relations theories/concepts; trends and issues related to diversity, and intercultural competency learning programs
    Ability to collaborate effectively and establish cooperative working relationships with diverse populations while performing assigned duties
    Maintenance of knowledge of best practices and current trends in diversity, equity, and inclusion and bring that knowledge to inform program and policy development work
    Model inclusive leadership, fostering a culture that prioritizes equitable decision-making and outcomes with the goal of student success.
    Excellent communication skills, both verbally and in writing, with a track record of positive management, leadership, and successful collaboration, as well as the ability to clearly communicate concepts, ideas, and information to influence a broad range of audiences, internally and externally
    Demonstrated and proven ability to initiate and lead large-scale programs and projects
    Ability to gather and analyze data, and to draw sound conclusions from the data to assess the impact of all DEIB initiatives and efforts at GUSOM
    Ability to manage competing priorities in a fast-paced environment
    Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality and professional discretion.
    Demonstrable understanding of campus culture including the role of faculty and shared governance, campus operations, the influence of government, and the needs of students, faculty, staff, and administration with respect to diversity

    Success in this leadership position requires a proven administrative leader who has entrepreneurial initiative and disposition to execute on key strategic initiatives, set priorities, build strong relationships, and derive satisfaction from delivering quality and timely outcomes. Strong partner collaboration, impeccable oversight and process coordination, data analysis and communication skills, combined with design skills and the ability to think through the application of technical solutions, is essential. Moreover, the Senior Associate Dean possesses the ability to fluctuate between strategic perspective and thinking to planning and execution of diverse projects.

    Clear and direct communication skills are required. This includes clear written and oral communication when conveying programmatic needs, professional development interests, project concerns, and vision for programs to community partners and campus affiliates - as well as strong social media skills, and the ability to engage in web-design, online outreach and building online communities on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, and LinkedIn.

    Strong supervisory skills are required for management oversight of interns and part-time and full-time staff affiliated with ODEIB. The Senior Associate Dean interviews candidates and provides supervisory feedback and performance evaluation to workers, and counsels workers out, if need-be, based on position performance.

    Robust data analysis skills are also required. The Senior Associate Dean devises, tracks, and records performance metrics for measuring diversity metrics, and measures and tracks the impact of outreach and recruitment management efforts of diverse students and faculty at other universities. These data analysis skills are deployed to assess metrics across students, staff, and faculty populations at the Georgetown University School of Medicine – as well as to design and build up alumni networks for GUSOM K-16 pre-med pathway programs.

    The Senior Associate Dean brings experience and aptitude in the management of budgets, personnel, and facilities, with the demonstrated ability to use these skills effectively; and provides oversight on all pathway program budgets while generating new fiscal projections of budgets for pathway program growth, development and launch of new alumni network programs.

    Effective public speaking skills are required for delivering Diversity Admissions Presentations, partner outreach presentations for pathway programs, and for leading school-wide events. Strong communication skills are needed to connect with donors and prepare development pitches to fundraise for pathway program needs through donors affiliated with the Georgetown University network.

    Professionalism is required for collaboration - including meeting the set business hours and getting approval for professional development conferences in advance, as well as extending professional and courteous treatment to all ODEI supervisors, staff, student interns, and colleagues.
