Job description
Transportation Engineer I:
Performs transportation engineering work in one or more functional areas such as planning, project development and design, transportation materials, quality monitoring, construction, transportation/traffic operations and/or maintenance.
Transportation Engineer II:
Performs complex transportation engineering work in one or more functional areas such as planning, project development and design, transportation materials, quality monitoring, construction, transportation/traffic operations and/or maintenance.
Transportation Engineer III:
Performs advanced and complex transportation engineering work in one or more functional areas such as planning, project development and design, transportation materials, quality monitoring, construction, transportation/traffic operations and/or maintenance.
Essential Duties:
Transportation Engineer I:
Inspects materials and calibrations according to Division and AASHTO standards.
Revises existing specifications and proposes updates to keep the section and division up to date with standards that benefit and enhance public safety and compliance.
Ensures compliance with AASHTO and division quality standards in the areas of coatings, calibration, and traffic materials.Assists in overseeing contracts, issuing work orders and monitoring construction schedules and contractor payments and job progress on calibrations.
Assists Project Managers related to resource assignments, schedules, scope, communication, quality, and/or procurement.
Monitors consultants' progress and work quality; checks invoices and associated documents; prepares supplemental agreements.
Performs inspections, evaluations and analyses of calibrations and provides technical guidance to the division and districts.
Recommends, to the division and districts, the replacement, rehabilitation or repair of out of calibration equipment.
Reviews designs and tests performed in all areas of calibrations and details of designs prepared by other engineers and technicians.
Writes reports, specifications, and test procedures.Coordinates with others to develop, monitor and update integrated project plans and schedules to ensure projects are executed in the most efficient manner possible.
Makes presentations and represents TxDOT.Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.
Transportation Engineer II – Performs all of the above duties plus:
Schedules, assigns and oversees section activities
Serves as a primary help desk resource for routine technical and policy issues.
Negotiates fees, explains scope of work and monitors consultant contracts.
Acts in an advisory capacity on administrative, technical, regulatory and engineering aspects of transportation.
Transportation Engineer III - Performs all of the above duties plus:
Develops and/or reviews engineering related documents, correspondence, reports and remediation plans
May serve as a lead worker and the related tasks
Performs final review, prepares, evaluates and negotiates contracts with consultants for routine and non-routine assignments.
Develops short-term and long-term goals and coordinates planning activities and resources required to meet goals.
Education:
Bachelor's Degree in engineering or related science bachelor's or higher degree accepted by TX PELS.
Experience: 4 years engineering, transportation engineering, or related engineering experience (Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent).
Transportation Engineer I - 4 years engineering, transportation engineering, or related engineering experience
Transportation Engineer II - 5 years engineering, transportation engineering, or related engineering experience
Transportation Engineer III - 6 years engineering, transportation engineering, or related engineering experience
Licenses and Certifications:
Valid driver's license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
Licensed Prof Engineer
Professional engineers licensed in another state in the United States, but not currently licensed in the State of Texas, must (1) meet the license requirements of the State of Texas Engineering Practices Act, (2) obtain a professional engineering license from the State of Texas within six (6) months of the date of hire, and (3) sign an agreement to that effect as a condition of employment.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience with contracts and project management, PEPS, laboratory and engineering operations and relevant safety guidelines.
Experience with APCM, quality monitoring programs, calibrations, and practicing audit-readiness.
PE licensed in areas of Control Systems, Industrial and Systems, and Mechanical.
Experience with MS Planner.

Speaking to present images and ideas in a clear, concise, organized, and interesting manner to optimize audience understanding and keep the ground focused
Evaluating products, equipement, and material
Maintaining a safe and effective working relationship with others
Some skill in:
Facilitating groups using effective communication methods; contributing to and guiding groups in defining objectives, staying on task and reaching consensus; soliciting participation, challenging ideas and summarizing accomplishments and planned actions
Other Attributes:

If you are a licensed Professional Engineer interested in instrumentation and calibrations, then let's talk As the engineer in coatings, calibrations, and traffic materials section of MTD, the successful candidate will be overseeing technical support and engineering/safety operations of the calibrations.
They will design, revise, and update departmental specifications and test procedures, and take part in proposing new processes needed to enhance calibrations efficiency and ensure public safety.
Through critical thinking and strategy, the engineer will streamline the efforts of the section across 25 districts and will serve as a planner for future projects.
By innovation and closely working along the section director, the engineer will play a critical part in making transportation plans and calibrations more reliable across the division and districts.
