    Position Summary

    Michigan State University (MSU) operates the Facility for Rare Isotope Beams (FRIB) as a user facility for the U.S. Department of Energy Office of Science (DOE-SC), supporting the mission of the DOE-SC Office of Nuclear Physics. FRIB provides researchers with one of the most advanced tools of modern science to study rare isotopes, or short-lived nuclei not normally found on Earth. Hosting what is designed to be the most powerful heavy-ion accelerator, FRIB enables scientists to make discoveries about the properties of rare isotopes, nuclear astrophysics, fundamental interactions, and applications for society, including in medicine, homeland security, and industry. User facility operation is supported by the DOE-SC Office of Nuclear Physics as one of 28 DOE-SC user facilities. MSU's nuclear physics graduate program is a top-ranked program nationally, according to U.S. News & World Report.

    Purpose:

    The Information Technologist I will perform complex professional support of computing and network systems, with an emphasis on the Linux platform, in an industrial controls system (ICS) environment.

    Major Duties/Responsibilities:
    • Install and maintain Linux IT infrastructure in an Industrial Controls System (ICS) environment including deployment, security, automation, monitoring, logging, upgrades, inventory, and documentation.
    • Write, update, and maintain Puppet configuration management programming code.
    • Install and maintain network hardware including installation in equipment racks, managed switch configuration, monitoring, logging, and documentation.
    • Provide IT support for ICS network users.
    • Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties in this job classification.
    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
    • Able to set up, configure, and maintain hypervisor clusters and containers.
    • Knowledge of configuration management software such as Puppet, Chef or Ansible.
    • Knowledge of computer networking aspects including switching, routing, VLANs, and firewalls.
    • Ability to use Linux operating systems.
    • Excellent communication skills to communicate effectively and credibly, both verbally and in writing with all audiences.
    • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suites.
    Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills

    Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program in Computer Science, Information Systems, Business or related information technology field, with coursework in an information technology specialization related to the area of employment; one to three years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in an information technology area related to the duties to be performed; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
    • Experience with the Linux operating system
    • Experience with configuration management software such as Puppet, Chef, or Ansible
    • Experience with computer networking aspects including switching, routing, VLANs, firewalls, etc.

    Desired Qualifications
    • Experience with supporting an industrial controls systems network
    • Experience with clustered and high-availability services
    • Experience with enterprise storage SAN/NAS systems
    • Experience with databases such as MySQL
    • Experience with Active Directory
    • Experience with Apache and Nginx web servers
    • Experience with version control systems such as Git
    • Experience with programming languages such as Python, Perl, Java, or Shell scripts
