    The Nurse Practitioner is responsible for providing care to clients by assessing clients' health status, conducting physical examinations and evaluations, providing treatment and prescribing medications, recommending follow-up care, and making referrals to appropriate health professionals. The employee will serve as a clinical authority in STD clinics and may deliver HIV care in the County's HIV clinics. In addition, the employee will provide health teaching and patient education, counseling and guidance. Work will be performed under the direction of a manager who provides administrative supervision, and under the technical direction of a physician. Work is performed in a variety of clinical settings and involves considerable standing and bending in the assessment and treatment of clients and some lifting, carrying or moving of objects weighing up to fifty pounds or using equivalent forces. While conducting physical examinations, employees in this class are regularly exposed to body fluids and human waste. Such exposure requires the wearing of protective gloves and the following of special procedures for contact with such communicable diseases as STD/HIV/AIDS. The employee also serves as a resource to the private sector on STD and HIV treatment; provides in-service education within Health and Human Services as well as education and/or consultation to community groups; and mentors/precepts nurse practitioner students as well as preventive medicine residents from local educational institutions.

    Minimum Qualifications

    Experience: Three (3) years of full-time equivalent post-licensure experience as a Registered Nurse; two (2) years of these 3 years must have been in patient evaluation, diagnosis and treatment and one (1) year of these 2 years must have been in community health nursing.

    Education: Graduation from an accredited college or university, or an equivalent program as determined by the Maryland Board of Nursing, with a Bachelor's Degree in Nursing and a Master's Degree in Public Health, Community Health Nursing or other appropriate nursing specialty; and successful completion of a Nurse Practitioner Program.

    Equivalency: An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted for the Master's Degree or for the required experience, but not for the successful completion of a Nurse Practitioner Program.

    License: Possession of a current license to practice as a Registered Nurse in the United States and certification as a Nurse Practitioner in the State of Maryland issued, or recognized, by the Maryland Board of Nursing (MBON). Maryland accepts as valid current RN licensure from a candidate's primary state of residence if that state is a party to National Nurse Licensure Compact (NNLC); additional information is available on the MBON website.
