    Charles and Muriel Kornheiser Clinical Scholars Program Job Summary:

    The Kornheiser Clinical Scholar Program is a one-year intensive research experience focusing on biomedical research and clinical mentorship activities at St. Francis Hospital in Roslyn, NY.

    The Clinical Scholar research experience combines both a learning curriculum and project-based experience developed to manifest an interest and a driving intuition towards high quality evidenced based research that can be called upon throughout their careers. The scholars learn directly from our research coordinators, epidemiologists, and other scientists the fundamentals of how to successfully design and implement multiple types of clinical research and population health studies. They are subsequently immersed in multiple projects at different stages of development from conception to publication, supervised and mentored by our highly experienced research team. Leadership and other opportunities exist for the scholars to build networks of formal and informal contacts in the medical community that will provide support as they seek future career goals.

    The clinical component focuses on clinical exposure, with an emphasis on cardiology, that is geared towards their research project and adds to their medical knowledge, practice-based learning foundations of patient care, interpersonal and communication skills, professionalism, skills practice, collaboration with all members of the patient care team...

    Both the clinical and research objectives are accomplished through clinical shadowing of physicians in general outpatient and inpatient care settings, interventional procedures, surgical procedures, non-invasive imaging, practice in patient centered care through one to one mentoring from the medical staff, research staff, as well as the opportunity for team participation and project development.

    Charles and Muriel Kornheiser Clinical Scholars Program Primary Components:

  • Research EducationResearch coordination, in-depth training in research protocol development, screening and consenting subjects, interviewing subjects for various protocols, and collecting data into a database.Training in the interpretation and dissemination of scientific data and results to a wide audience through journal-club discussions.High level training in didactic and discussion formats in biostatistics and epidemiology including:Collection, manipulation, and cleaning of research dataPrimary biostatistics tests utilized in clinical researchPerforming literature reviews, understanding dynamics of disease transmission, measures of morbidity and mortalityObservational and experimental study designs and implementation including: cross-sectional, case-control, cohort, and ecological studies as well as randomized clinical trials, meta-analysis, and big data/artificial intelligenceAnalysis and prevention of bias and error in clinical research, techniques in causal inference
  • Research ProjectHands-on involvement in initial development of at least 2 novel projects from conception including the development of research protocols, literature review, creation of data collection/consent forms, involvement with internal review board (IRB) approval, as well as consenting and following patients through the projects.Additional hands-on experience in other projects at various stages to provide experience as a research coordinator consenting patients and collecting study variables, as an analyst cleaning and analyzing data and producing a final project suitable for presentation at a major scientific meeting or submitted for publication in a scientific journal.
  • Clinical Education- provide basics of coronary artery atherosclerosis, cardiac structure and function, overview of indications and pathology, assessing ischemia, assessing for amyloid, introduction to ECG, and arrhythmias device indications and management.Cardiac Imaging-CT, MRI, Echocardiography, Nuclear PET, learn equipment, fundamentals, anatomy, scanning techniques, contrast agents, plane manipulation, hemodynamicsInterventional Cardiology – Catheterization lab, coronary anatomy, imaging, OCT, IVUS, iFR measurementsStructural Cardiology; TAVR, Mitraclip, Watchman proceduresCardiac Surgery: CABG, Valvular heart surgeryHeart Failure: patient care and interventionsElectives: experience in specialties including, electrophysiology, neurology, neurosurgery, oncology, renal, internal medicine, and working with hospitalists
