FITNESS INSTRUCTOR
The Astoria Parks & Recreation Department is currently looking to hire Fitness Instructors to lead group fitness classes offered during the day and in the evening for participants of varying ages and fitness levels. Depending on skill-set, the instructor will teach aquatic aerobics, CrossFit, HIIT, and/or beginner weight training classes. Classes are held indoors (weight room and pool) and outdoors at the Astoria Aquatic Center, weather permitting. We're looking for instructors who demonstrate professionalism, the ability to lead and motivate participants, and a commitment to providing safe, inclusive, and engaging fitness programming.
The Fitness Instructor role is one assignment within the Recreation Program Specialist position. Recreation Program Specialists help deliver and support a variety of Parks & Recreation programs. Duties may include officiating youth and adult sports, leading fitness classes, supporting youth after-school and day camp programs by planning and leading activities and supervising participants, and assisting with special events such as Free Movies in the Park, sports tournaments, and other community activities as needed. In all assignments, Recreation Program Specialists are responsible for the daily supervision of participants and for maintaining a safe, healthy, and welcoming environment for everyone involved.
SCHEDULE
This is a part-time position, working approximately 25 hours per month. Instructors who are available for the summer season or on an ongoing basis are encouraged to apply.
- Weekday Mid-Day Class Time Range: 10:00 AM – 3:00 PM
- Weekday Evening Class Time Range: 4:00 PM – 6:30 PM
- Weekend Class Time Range: Saturdays 8:00 AM - 10:00 AM
Schedules may be adjusted based on program needs and participant enrollment levels.
HIRING PROCESS
Applications will be reviewed on an ongoing basis. Candidates selected for interviews will participate in an interview and brief skills demonstration.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Supports the Parks and Recreation Department's in preparation and delivery of ongoing and specialized programs, activities and events.
- Leads fitness classes for youth and adults (land-based and in-water)
- Prepares, cleans and maintains facilities and equipment before and after use for ongoing and specialized programs, activities and events following checklists and training provided.
- Assists with patron registration, check-in/check-out processes using the Department's recreation management software.
- Monitors and engages with patrons during programs, activities and events to ensure safety including overseeing the use of facilities and equipment in compliance with City and other relevant rules and regulations.
- Inventories supplies and essential items and communicates programmatic needs to Recreation Coordinator.
- Communicates effectively with participants in assigned programs, provides information and assistance regarding general inquiries, programs, and schedules.
- Assists in responding to emergency situations in the workplace by following established emergency action plans, providing First Aid/CPR as necessary, contacting appropriate agencies for support, and documenting incidents as they occur.
- Keeps certifications current according to assigned role.
- Inspects the condition of equipment and supplies for safety, proper operation, and maintenance needs; reports any repair or maintenance issues to appropriate personnel.
- Takes attendance regularly and checks participants in; completes forms and reports relating to attendance, safety, and activities.
- Creates fitness class plans and schedules
- Provides instruction appropriate for participants with varying fitness levels and abilities.
- Demonstrates proper exercise techniques and ensures participant safety at all times.
- Demonstrates abilities to work collaboratively in a team environment with a spirit of cooperation.
- Maintains punctual, regular and predictable attendance.
- Maintains a neat and professional appearance and follows established dress code
- Respectfully takes direction from the supervisor and lead staff.
- Follows all safety rules and procedures established for various work areas.
- Follows policies, procedures, and guidelines as described in the City of Astoria Personnel Manual and other documentation related to this position.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABLITIES
- Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
- Advanced knowledge of fitness disciplines including, but not limited to, any of the following: spin class, cardio kickboxing, TRX, Zumba, yoga, Pilates, weight training, aerobics, Jazzercise, dance, aqua aerobics.
- Understanding of safety practices and emergency procedures, with the ability to respond calmly and effectively in urgent situations.
- Flexibility and the ability to adapt to changes in schedules, programs, or participant needs.
- Ability to plan and lead engaging activities.
- Ability to use recreation, childcare or other program-related software based on their assigned role.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
This position does not have supervisory responsibilities.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

- Minimum High School diploma or GED.
- Prior experience leading group fitness programs or activities.
- Possession of a current CPR/First Aid card or the ability to obtain one within thirty (30) days of hire.
- Ability to pass a City-required background check which includes criminal, sex offender and social security trace records checks.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
- Ability to communicate in English & Spanish
- Training or certificates from an accredited agency related to fitness instruction
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Depending on the program, Recreation Program Specialists may be required to work in a range of indoor and outdoor settings, such as gyms, swimming pools, and on paved or unpaved surfaces, depending on the assigned programs and scheduled activities. The noise level in these environments can vary from moderate to loud.
