Maintain patient dignity, comfort, and confidentiality at all times.

    Assisting with Cardiac Procedures:

Assist cardiologists during TEE procedures and stress echocardiography.
Monitor patients during pharmacologic or exercise stress testing in collaboration with nursing and physician staff.
Follow established safety protocols and emergency response procedures.

    Data Interpretation & Reporting:

Perform preliminary measurements and calculations in accordance with lab protocols.
Accurately document exam findings, measurements, and technical impressions.
Ensure timely completion of reports within the electronic medical record or imaging system.

    Equipment Maintenance & Quality Assurance:

Operate and maintain echocardiography ultrasound equipment.
Perform routine quality control, cleaning, and basic troubleshooting.
Adhere to lab accreditation standards (e.g., IAC Echocardiography).

    Patient Education:

Provide patients with clear instructions before, during, and after echocardiographic procedures.
Answer patient questions within scope of practice.

Or a related allied health field
Graduation from an accredited sonography program preferred.

    Certifications:

Required or Preferred Certifications (varies by employer/state):

RDCS – Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer (ARDMS)
RCS – Registered Cardiac Sonographer (CCI)
Additional specialty credentials (e.g., Fetal Echo) may be preferred depending on role.

    Skills & Abilities:

Strong knowledge of cardiac anatomy, physiology, and pathology
Proficiency in echocardiography imaging techniques and protocols
Ability to recognize urgent or critical findings
    Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
Strong attention to detail and time management
Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team

    Work Environment:

    Hospitals
    Cardiology departments
    Outpatient cardiology clinics
Diagnostic and heart & vascular centers

    States Requiring Certification or Licensing:

    Certification Requirements:

Most employers require national certification (ARDMS or CCI).
    Certification is often mandatory for:

    Independent scanning
    Career advancement
    Compliance with lab accreditation standards

    State Licensing:

Most states do not require a separate state license for cardiac sonographers.
Some states may require licensure or registration for diagnostic medical imaging professionals depending on facility or modality.

    > Employers typically rely on national certification (RDCS or RCS) rather than state licensure to establish competency.

    Common Certifications for Cardiac Sonographers:

Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer (RDCS) – ARDMS
Registered Cardiac Sonographer (RCS) – CCI

(Note: Certifications such as RCIS, RVT, or CET are not typically required for a cardiac sonographer role unless the position is dual-specialty.)
