The City of Bonney Lake is located in East Pierce County and remains one of the fastest growing cities in the County and Western Washington.

With a population just over 21,000 (encompassing 7 square miles), the City provides well balanced opportunities for working, living and play/recreation.

Bonney Lake is the perfect place for families and offers affordable housing, many shopping options, trails/parks, several lakes, an active community and great schools We are the heart of the plateau with sweeping views of Mount Rainier from many vantage points throughout the City.


The Police Department enjoys great support from the community and the current administration, which includes the City Administrator, Mayor and Council.

The department is comprised of a 32 Commissioned Officers (Police Chief, 2 Assistant Chiefs, 5 Sergeants, 25 Police Officers) and 7.5 Non-Commissioned Officers (2.5 Community Service Officers, 3 Records Clerks, a Confidential Administrative Assistant, and a Child Passenger Safety Manager).

In addition, to the regular duties of a Police Officer.

the department also offers opportunities for ancillary duties to include, but not limited to:

Marine Services Unit, Investigations, Metro Tactical Response Team, Field Training Officer, Specialized Traffic Emphasis, Public Information Officer, School Resource Officer, Metro Collision Response Team, CJTC TAC Officer, Firearms Instructor and other opportunities.


PREMIUM PAY
In addition to the generous wage/benefits package the City offers the following premiums:

Education: 2.5% for AA/AS, 5% for BA/BS;

Detective: 5%;

Field Training Officer: 5%;

Detective: 5%;

Hazardous Duty: 2.5%, Motorcycle 5%;

Longevity Pay:
A compounding longevity pay program, with credit for Lateral Police Officers from service to a prior agency:
Step 1: 7 to 10 years - 2% increase

Step 2:
years - 3% additional increase

Step 3:
years - 4% additional increase
Paid Time Off (PTO) bank available.

GENERAL PURPOSE


Performs a variety of routine and complex general duty police work involving the protection of life and property; the enforcement of City, State and Federal laws, prevention and investigation of crimes and maintenance of order.

Supervision Received

Works under the general supervision of a Bonney Lake Police Sergeant.


SUPERVISION EXERCISED


Generally, none; however, an officer may be assigned to work with new members of the department, reserve officers, temporary employees or volunteers as assigned or required.


Due to scheduling and seniority, an officer may be the senior officer on duty and may have to be in charge until a supervisor is notified.

Essential Functions


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES


Maintains current knowledge of applicable Local, State, Federal laws, as well as the rules, regulations and policies of the Bonney Lake Police Department as set for by the Chief of Police.

Patrols the area(s) of the City of Bonney Lake to enforce laws, prevent crime, preserve peace and order, and provide public protection to ensure safety and security of individuals and property;

Initiates and/or responds to calls for service or the scene of any incident requiring police attention; Maintains public peace and order; submits all required reports in an accurate and timely manner.

Assists in resolving criminal, non criminal and civil issues up to and including but not limited to warnings, mediation, reports, and referral reports to outside agencies, infractions, citations or arrests.

Processes complaints, arrests offenders, conducts routine investigations; obtains search warrants, collects and preserve related evidence; interview victims, witnesses, and suspects; assures that all work is in accord with legal City, State and Federal guidelines, as well as the Bonney Lake Police Department Policies & Procedures, and accepted law enforcement practices.

Develops knowledge regarding streets, landmarks, local activities, known criminals, locations of frequent criminal or hazardous conduct or any other matter of police interest in the community; participates in crime prevention initiatives.

Responds to traffic collisions or other medical emergencies and renders necessary first aid/CPR until medically trained responders arrive.
Properly cares for all City issued equipment assigned by the City to assist in the performance of duties.
Performs traffic and crowd control functions as necessary; Facilitates traffic flow and safeguard against collisions.

Testifies in court proceedings when required by subpoena; Prepares for court testimony by ensuring any physical evidence is present upon request of the prosecuting attorney; Review reports; familiarizes self with the facts to be able to testify in a knowledgeable manner.

Uses force as necessary and in accordance with current departmental policy and procedures; protects self and others from physical harm.

Transports and books prisoners into detention facilities.
Reports to superior officer any hazardous conditions, equipment problems or matters of intelligence.
Arrives to work on time for duty hours, dressed in proper uniform, neat appearance, and physically fit for duty.
Signs, understands and is committed to the Oath of Office.
Reads, understands and maintains a current copy of the Police Department policy and procedures operations manual.


PERIPHERAL DUTIES


Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned by superiors or as contained in the City policies, Police Department policies or Civil Service Rules.

May serve as a member or leader of various City committees.
Provides backup to related positions, as needed.

Education And Experience

Education, Experience and License Requirements/Competency Requirements

Graduation from a standard high school, vocational school or equivalency; and

Currently employed as a Peace Officer with at least two (2) years experience with a municipal, county, or state law enforcement agency and successful completion of the Washington State Criminal Justice Training Center Officer Academy or the Washington State Criminal Justice Training Center Officer Equivalency certificate.


Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:


Considerable knowledge of computers and standard office software; considerable knowledge of local, state and federal laws relating to law enforcement; knowledge of modern police methods and procedures; knowledge of laws of arrest, search and seizure; knowledge of principles of crime and accident investigation; knowledge of basic techniques for crime prevention and criminal investigations; knowledge of identification and preservation of evidence; knowledge of organization and planning; knowledge of geography and street locations; knowledge of first aid principles and applicable procedures.

Ability to operate police vehicle and other police equipment in all situations; Ability to deal with the public in a courteous, firm and effective manner; Ability to work as an individual or as a team to accomplish a goal or objective; Ability to analyze dangerous situations rapidly and accurately and adopt an appropriate course of action; ability to work and maintain control in stressful, hostile and hazardous situations; Ability to enforce applicable laws; Ability to prepare clear, concise and accurate reports; Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions; Ability to effectively communicate with the public and other City employees using the English language; Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, elected officials, and citizens; Ability to demonstrate accuracy in working with multiple tasks at the same time; Ability to exhibit good judgment and decision making.

Special Requirements

Valid Washington State Driver's License or ability to obtain one.
Ability to read and write the English language.
Must be a citizen of the United States of America, A lawful permanent resident or deferred action for childhood arrivals (DACA) recipient
Good physical condition
Not less than 21 years of age at the time of examination.

Ability to pass entrance examination (physical fitness and cognitive) successfully and meet the minimum medical and health standards adopted by the Civil Service Commission.

Stringent personal background investigation; polygraph examination, psychological evaluation conducted by a licensed psychologist; and a medical physical, including a drug-screening test.

Personal computer, including word processing, spreadsheet and data base software; vehicles, radars, cameras, and specialized law enforcement equipment.

Medical:
Medical coverage through the LEOFF Trust Plan F, which is a Preferred Provider Plan.

Employees pay 5%/month towards the premium for all enrolled on the plan up to maximum of two dependent children (more be enrolled; however, there is no additional cost).

The plan has a 90% coverage after a $200/family deductible has been met.

There is a $10 co-pay for a 90-day supply for mail order generic prescriptions and up to $100 for brand name prescriptions.

In addition, this plan has a rich benefit for individual paid retiree programs, which are offered to retirees upon their eligibility.

The core work week is forty (40) hours, Monday through Friday 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., although many departments have implemented alternative schedules for those employees wishing to work a flex schedule. Some positions require weekend, shift, holiday, and/or overtime.

The City of Bonney Lake provides a regular progression of salary increases for specific job classifications. Most positions provide for step increases on the anniversary of the employee's hiring date.

Some City positions require union membership and salaries of employees falling under a collective bargaining agreement are adjusted according to conditions of the agreement.
