Job Description Summary:
Under direct supervision, performs technical natural resource field operations to ensure safe and healthy natural areas throughout the Parks and Recreation system. Performs a variety of skilled and semi-skilled tasks in the areas of natural lands maintenance, vegetation management (integrated pest management and restoration), wildlife management, and visitor management. Operates a variety of power tools and specialized equipment in the performance of these duties.
Job Description:
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Performs technical, field based natural resources functions across multiple disciplines for the Parks & Recreation system to ensure safe and efficient operations.
- Performs field operations such as research, surveys, monitoring, mitigation, maintenance and outreach associated with various natural resource disciplines.
- Performs associated office operations such as data entry.
- Implements ecological best management practices across all program areas.
- Assists in the implementation of projects and programs.
- Utilizes technology and applications such as Survey 123, GPS, Field Maps, and the ArcGIS platform to collect and update data across disciplines in established databases.
- Keeps records of work performed, materials and supplies utilized, and responds to assigned work orders
- Removes noxious and invasive weeds by utilizing assorted mechanical methods (digging, hand pulling, whipping, tractor and mower operation) and by chemical control (backpack spraying, wicking, stump treatments).
- Implements biological and cultural vegetation control methods as needed.
- Performs restoration projects such as native tree/forb planting, watering duties, re-seeding, seed collection, mulching, mitigation work and wildlife habitat enhancements.
- Conducts visual wildlife surveys such as early morning prairie dog counts, ANS monitoring, bird observations and evening frog surveys.
- Performs wildlife mitigation with a focus on prairie dog management including relocation and utilizing exclusionary measures such as installing and maintaining barriers.
- Assists with volunteer, jail crew, youth crew and community service projects.
- Assists with public environmental education and outreach programs including tabling and trail monitoring.
- Performs trash removal and restroom maintenance.
- Assists with maintenance and construction of infrastructure including fencing, trails and signage.
- Performs snow duty and emergency response work for the city including tree damage and flood mitigation as needed.
- Works within a crew to maximize project completion, team cohesion and individual contribution.
- Operates a city vehicle; possibly four-wheel drive; possibly on rough terrain.
- Takes proper safety precautions to prevent injuries and accidents.
- Ensures safety of self, others, materials and equipment. Uses all required safety equipment and follows all safety regulations, policies and procedures.
- Reports all accidents, injuries or damage to city property.
- Knows and complies with all policies and reporting infractions.
- Participates in professional trainings and development.

- Have and maintain acceptable background information, including criminal conviction history.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Ability to identify vegetation species common to the Front Range of Colorado.
- Previous experience with and/or college level coursework related to IPM, restoration, ecology, biology, environmental education, visitor management, community engagement, wildlife management or a related field.
- Previous experience with land maintenance operations.
- Training/experience with herbicides including previous mixing experience, product selection knowledge and backpack applications.
- Training/experience with wildlife management and/or surveys especially prairie dog management such as active or passive relocation and/or the installation and maintenance of barriers.
- Training/experience with hand tools such as shovels, hammers and pruners and with mechanical equipment use such as a tractor, weed whip, chainsaw, UTV, large mower, drill seeder or pulling a trailer.
- Experience with GIS and/or asset management programs.
- Previous work as a member of a crew especially completing natural resource management or land management field tasks.
- First Aid and CPR Certification
REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- High school diploma, GED, or equivalent.
- Minimum of six (6) months experience in natural lands management.
- Completion of Colorado State University's Pesticide Applicator Basic Training Course or equivalent or ability to obtain within one (1) month.

WORKING CONDITIONS AND REQUIREMENTS
- Physical and Mental Effort: Ability to lift 50 lbs. Requires standing, walking, bending, climbing, lifting, dragging, and pushing on uneven or slippery surfaces. Ability to work around or in trees and utilize all equipment common to the arboricultural industry. Frequent hand/eye coordination to operate personal computer and office equipment; Vision for reading, recording and interpreting information. Ability to communicate with employees, contractors and the public via verbal and written communication. Ability to work under stress from public contact and changing priorities and conditions.
- Work Environment: Time primarily spent in an outdoor, urban environment year-round. Engage in physically demanding tasks outdoors across a variety of weather conditions and subject to continuous interruptions and background noises. Potential exposure to dangerous wildlife (e.g., rattlesnakes, stinging insects), toxic chemicals (e.g., pesticides), and dangerous weather conditions (e.g., heat, cold, lightning). Often working with or near large, loud equipment. Work may include extended periods of time viewing a computer video monitor and/ or operating a keyboard. Willingness and ability to maintain flexibility regarding irregular hours, weekends, evenings, holidays, and emergencies.
