    The Role

    Designs components or portions of systems and modifies existing designs to develop or improve products and facilitate manufacturing operations. Utilizes computer-aided design equipment and/or graphic tools such as, CAD, CAM, NX, or CATIA. Gathers information, makes studies, computes calculations, and prepares original rough layouts, sketches to present design proposal. Coordinates design criteria with engineering, manufacturing, tooling, material, and planning group such as ease of manufacture, availability of materials, and contractual specifications. Exclude classifications in which incumbents predominantly perform drafting assignments.

    This position is for a senior level designer in the A4W Reactor Plant Planning Yard (Department E83) supporting the maintenance, overhaul, and modernization of Nimitz Class aircraft carriers. This is a leadership position in the A4W Shielding and Ship Fabrication group (S&SF) intended to fill an important need for the E83 Structures design team. With the planned integration of multiple new technologies and processes into ship checking and ShipAlt drawing development, E83 is seeking a leader who is able to combine expertise in tried and true processes with a strong practical understanding of new high-tech solutions in order to drive effective implementation of digital tools.

    Must Have

    Associate's Degree and 6 years of relevant experience

    One of the following may be used as equivalent to Associate's Degree to meet minimum qualifications:

    • NNS Apprentice School graduate
    • Navy Nuclear Power School (NNPS) graduate
    • High School/GED and 2 years of related Manufacturing, Shipbuilding, Trades, Military experience
    • High School/GED and 4 years of non-related Manufacturing, Shipbuilding, Trades, Military experience
    Nice to Have

    - Substantial structural design experience supporting Nimitz Class Ship Alterations (ShipAlts), to include expertise in developing structural Ship Modification Drawings
    - Extensive AutoDesk Inventor 3D modeling experience in a structural design role
    - Familiarity with A4W Reactor Plant Planning Yard digital initiatives and future products
    - Substantial ship checking experience on Nimitz Class ships, to include experience in coordination and leadership roles
    - Experience interfacing with Newport News Shipbuilding, Norfolk Naval Shipyard, and Puget Sound Naval Shipyard on stuctural concerns
    - Experience interfacing with external commercial vendors on ShipAlt structural design concerns
    - Experience collaborating with NNL and NAVSEA 08 on structural design concerns
    - Extensive experience laser scanning Nimitz Class plant spaces for structural ShipAlt development purposes
    - Experience traveling to Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, Naval Air Station North Island, and Fleet Activities Yokosuka for ship checking purposes, to include experience coordinating travel and credentialing for nuclear work
    - Experience ship checking both nuclear and non-nuclear structure on Nimitz Class ships, including both traditional ship checking and laser scanning
    - Department E83 Reactor Plant Planning Yard On-Site Representative experience
    - Exposure to Siemens NX and TeamCenter
    - Experience mentoring junior designers in the processes and requirements associated with ShipAlt product development
