The Occupational Therapist is assigned to the Spinal Cord Injury and Disorders Program providing service to an inpatient ward that includes a 38-bed comprehensive inpatient program an acute consultation program and an outpatient program serving a population of over 1300 Veterans with spinal cord injury.

Duties

• Incumbent develops the Occupational Therapy program for patients treated on the Spinal Cord Injury and Disorders SCI/D Unit with special focus on Assistive Technologies AT Goals of treatment are to demonstrate advanced skills with the SCI/D population to evaluate physical and cognitive functioning maintain restore and enhance performance potential for independent living maximize function within their lifestyle aid in adjustment understanding disability recommend appropriate placement or discharge plans Duties include but are not limited to Demonstrates advanced knowledge of Assistive Technologies advanced knowledge to include screening evaluation treatment interventions specific to SCI/D populations areas appropriate usage devices evaluation ordering training compensatory devices for Veterans SCI/D Performs complex occupational therapy evaluations for SCI/D patients regard activities daily living Evaluates patients spinal cord injuries related disorders specialized individualized technology needs Considered during evaluation patient level injury mechanism pre post-morbid cognitive visual levels function post-injury impairments Provides training use external internal tools Assistive Technology rehabilitation Assesses properly prescribes rehabilitative compensatory tools Evaluates patients who demonstrate need assistive technologies order maximize independence ADLs IADLs recreational activities Consults veteran medical team nursing wound care nurse regarding unique needs skin integrity wound healing Demonstrates entire spectrum deficits necessitate need assistive technologies strategies remediation compensation these deficits Develops protocols evaluation issuance Assistive Technologies including templates documentation reference sheets screening treatment progression updates interdisciplinary team Uses advanced knowledge evidence based OT treatment interventions multiple areas practice evaluate determine goals implement program recommend adaptive equipment assistive technologies plan discharge for within specialized areas Externally communicates changes patient status development programs discharge plans Assesses ability use adaptive equipment including ADL aids power manual mobility bathroom aids emergency access technology other assistive technologies Participate home visits assess safety self-care ergonomic considerations need adaptive equipment/assistive technology relates participates education area assistivetechnologies clinicians locally nationally Established contact local national specialists keep updated innovative products rehabilitation interventions Demonstrates clinical instructor affiliating students emphasis SCID-assistivetechnology expertise Provides expertise staff additional focus assisitivetech Provides OT-relevant training nursing staff needed helpcare veterans SCIDduringrehabilitation Oversees day-to-day operation clinicareasassigned Provides input Chief Chief Supervisor development revision departmentpolicy procedures requestedAssists Program Manager establishing standards designing implementing protocol requested Communicate regularly formally informally patents family caregivers regarding careneeds
