    Overview:

    Machinist III: (ARL

    Bowhead has an immediate need for a Machinist III to support the Army Research Laboratory (ARL) at Aberdeen Proving Ground (APG).

    Responsibilities:
    • Fabricate and/or modify many unique and precision items in support of the Army Research Laboratory Contracts programs.
    • Fabricate and/or modifiy items include, but are not limited to, ballistic testing projectiles, armor test samples, test fixtures, target fixtures, launch packages, ballistic models, instrumentation, and specialized equipment.
    • Shall have the technical competence to work efficiently and hold very close tolerances (+/- .005 ") as a minimum for the lowest level requirement, and (+/- .0001") for higher level fabrications.
    • Set up and consistently and accurately program Mazak machine mills and lathes.
    • Without direct supervision, manufacture necessary tooling, jigs and fixtures and perform cylindrical grinding.
    • Independently and proficiently operate a fourth axis unit on the CNC and manual mills, lathes, Bridgeports, drill presses, belt sanders, grinders.
    • Read drawings and sketches provided by technical points of contact, independently set-up machine tools, prepare parts/materials and hardware, fabricate components, thoroughly clean/deburr, and assemble items as required.
    • Operate and maintain conventional lathes and machinery.
    • Solve mathematical problems related to assignments.
    • Provide recommendations for improving operations by recommending new equipment, methods, or materials for accomplishment of tasks, consistent with applicable regulatory guidance and safety SOPs.
    • Fabricate specialized tooling for unique machining operations.
    • Provide guidance to Engineers and Machinists in machining principles and order of operations.
    • Assist in design modification by compiling data related to design, specifications, and materials which are pertinent to specific items of equipment or component parts. Develop information concerning previous operational failures and modifications. Use judgment and initiative to recognize inconsistencies or gaps in data and seek sources to clarify information.
    • Other duties as assigned.
    Qualifications:
    • High School diploma or equivalent is required at a minimum.
    • Demonstrate the ability to proficiently generate machine codes from the sketches/drawings to operate the Computer Numerically Controlled (CNC) mill and lathe to manufacture parts.
    • Proficiency in Manual Machining prototype work.
    • Able to do minor welding, tig, and stick oxyacetylene.
    • Capable of shop related math skills.
    • Work from verbal and written customer instructions to complete assignments.
    • Proficiency in the use of SolidCam Software to program test items.
    • Basic to Intermediate level skills in Microsoft Office software suite - Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint
    • Ability to communicate effectively with all levels of employees and outside contacts
    • Strong interpersonal skills and good judgment with the ability to work alone or as part of a team
    • Must be able to obtain and maintain certification/license to operate Government and Bowhead vehicles at all times
