    Associate Professor:
    Bioinformatics and/or Biostatistics Job Type Faculty Position Information


    The Department of Agriculture, Food and Resource Science at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore is seeking highly qualified applicants in the areas of agricultural bioinformatics and/or biostatistics.

    This is a nine-month tenure track position that will work integratively within the UMES Agricultural Experiment Station, and collaboratively with UMES Extension.


    University Information:
    The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES), an 1890 Land-Grant Institution in Maryland. The University is located in a rural setting on the Delmarva Peninsula between the Atlantic Ocean and Chesapeake Bay. Major metropolitan areas from Washington, DC, Philadelphia, PA to New York City are within reach.

    Responsibilities


    The successful candidate will:

    • Develop a nationally recognized program in bioinformatics by conducting omics and predictive modeling research related to biotic and abiotic stress factors, and quality parameters influencing plant/animal growth and development.
    • Work with and provide data analytical/bioinformatics support to a team of plant breeder/biotechnologist, plant pathologist, entomologist/plant biologist, and other researchers in the School of Agricultural and Natural Sciences.
    • Develop and teach introductory courses in bioinformatics, computer concepts for bioinformatics, metagenomics and statistics-related courses in experimental design.
    • Supervise and provide extensive training to undergraduate and graduate students in analyzing omics data sets by utilizing available online resources.
    • Develop an extra-murally funded research program and publish outputs from their work in refereed journals.
    • Performs other related duties as assigned.
    Classification Farming, Fishing, and Forestry Occupations Required Qualifications


    • PhD in computer science, bioinformatics, statistics or other quantitative sciences. Candidates with degrees in other relevant fields but with demonstrated experience in bioinformatics and statistics will be considered.
    • Note: Individuals with degrees outside of the US may be subject to verification at the expense of the candidate.
    • Proficient in computer programming including but not limited to Python, R and/or Perl, C++, and commonly used bioinformatics software for analysis of large data sets.
    • Proven track record of publications in peer reviewed journals.
    Preferred Qualifications

    In addition to the required qualifications, the following are preferred:


    • Teaching experience at the undergraduate and graduate levels in bioinformatics and/or statistics.
    • Experienced in high-throughput analysis of next generation omics data analysis including genomic, transcriptomic/gene expression, proteomic and metabolomic datasets.
    • Expertise in computational biology, synthetic biology applications and being well versed with plant and animal molecular biology and biotechnology concepts.
    • A strong background and understanding of statistical software such as SAS, SPSS, MATLAB
    • Ability to work with student and faculty clusters from diverse backgrounds is highly desirable.
