    What Health System Pharmacy contributes to Cardinal Health

    Pharmacy Operations is responsible for the safe, efficient and effective coordination of Cardinal Health's pharmacy operations that service acute care hospitals, hospital retail customers, ambulatory care and alternate site facilities, oncology and cardiology practices as well as retail customers.

    Health System Pharmacy is responsible for providing customized pharmacy program solutions that reduce costs and improve patient care quality for hospitals, health systems and other integrated healthcare providers may also consult with and advise healthcare team on prescribed medications, supplies and related processes.

    Job Summary

    Under general direction of the Residency Program Director / System Pharmacy Clinical Director, and assigned credentialed pharmacist preceptors, the PGY1 Pharmacy Resident performs a variety of professional level functions to assist in the provision of pharmaceutical care. All activities are designed as part of an organized, directed, and structured 12-month postgraduate pharmacy training program accredited by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP).

    Responsibilities
    • Participate in required, elective, and longitudinal learning experiences under guidance from credentialed pharmacist preceptors. Residents are expected to satisfactorily meet goals and objectives associated with each learning experience and follow established policies/procedures under each training site.

    • Deliver direct patient care and medication management services throughout the care continuum. Patient care settings include acute care, long-term care, general medicine, and psychiatry/mental health. Patient populations may include adults, geriatrics, and pediatrics.

    • Evaluate and monitor medication therapy for clinical appropriateness and safety including, but not limited to, treatment indication, dosing, duration of therapy, drug-drug/drug-disease/drug-food interactions, adverse effects, therapeutic duplication, therapeutic alternatives, medication compliance, etc.

    • Educate healthcare professionals and patients on pharmacotherapy-related topics to promote evidence-based, patient-centered, cost-effective, and safe utilization of medications.

    • Collaborate effectively with numerous healthcare disciplines and healthcare staff during the provision of pharmaceutical care.

    • Participate in medication safety, drug policy, and performance improvement activities as assigned by preceptors to continually improve the medication-use process.

    • Participate in scholarly activities to contribute to the advancement of pharmacy practice.

    • Monitor/evaluate one's own performance and self-improvement throughout the training program.

    • Perform routine duties and activities of a fully trained, licensed pharmacist.

    • Perform other functions and responsibilities as deemed necessary by the Residency Program Director/ System Pharmacy Clinical Director and pharmacist preceptors.

    • Other duties as assigned.


    Qualifications
    • Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) degree from an ACPE-accredited school of pharmacy.

    • Valid Massachusetts pharmacy intern license prior to starting.

    • Valid pharmacist license in Massachusetts, or eligibility to obtain within 90 days of start date.

    • Maintain professional conduct and appearance.

    • Knowledge of federal and state laws and regulations regarding pharmacy practice and protected health information.

    • Understand institutional policies/procedures including standard precautions and infection control and prevention.

    • Effective interpersonal and communication skills (verbal and written) across multiple disciplines.

    • Ability to work in collaborative environments.

    • Time management skills, and ability to effectively handle concomitant responsibilities and set priorities.

    • Ability to work independently and make sound judgements with minimal supervision.

    • Commitment to continually improve one's own performance through self-reflection, self-evaluation, and solicitation/incorporation of feedback.

    • Ability to travel (via automobile or other means of transportation) to sites throughout the Commonwealth of Massachusetts).

    • Provide staffing every other weekend.

    • A Covid-19 vaccination or a legitimate accommodation is required in order to be employed in this position.
