    The Mechanical Engineer, R D, will collaborate with the Alamo Group Advanced Technology Center and business unit Engineers to evaluate and design advanced technology products.

    The Mechanical Engineer, R D will design various mechanical components needed for electrification efforts of chassis and Alamo Group business units' products.

    The Mechanical Engineer, R D will:

    Plan, conceptualize, design, and integrate various hybrid electric systems into truck chassis and other Alamo Group productsInitiates, develops, documents, and implements testing processes and perform testing and validation of new designsWork in partnership with multiple business units to understand products' and collaborate on solutionsDesign rotor hub, housing, and mounts for 180kW engine mounted generator (ISG) Analyze the structure of drivetrain components Integrate generators and motors into vehicle drivelinesModify chassis and various structures to accommodate electrificationReplace and redesign hydraulic systems to utilize electric motors where possiblePosition and mount electric drive components with respect to space claim, NVH, thermal and electrical criteria Design power distribution boxThe layout of cooling, battery pack, routing of high voltage wires Drive design choices to maximize safety and value to the company.

    Researches and continuously learns new technologies available with the goal of incorporating them into current and new product designs.
    Performs other duties/assignments as required.


    The ideal candidate should have/be:
    Rotating machine experience- designs using bearings, rotating shafts, gears, sideloads, thrust loads, vibrations, etc. Apply thorough knowledge of powertrain gearbox driveline design to drive innovation into Alamo Group business units' productsSheetmetal design - Machined parts - 3D printed- molded Ability to read, interpret and create blueprints, schematics, operator's manuals, and assembly instructionsAbility to perform basic measurements using tape measure, protractor, calipers, micrometers, and other measuring devicesSkilled and proficient with the use of personal computers; including JDE, and standard office software (i.e., Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Access, etc.)


    Experience using CAD software such as SolidWorks, AutoCAD, or similarFamiliar with High and Low voltage electric drive systems including motors, inverters, battery packsKnowledge and understanding of Electromagnetic Interference (EMI) principles and EMI shieldingExperience with high voltage EV connectors (Tyco, Amphenol etc.) Experience with Class 6-8 truck chassis design and modificationWorking knowledge with EPA truck emissions rules and changesKnowledge in steel manufacturing (fabrication and welding) equipment and processes with familiarity with MIG, TIG, and plasma cuttersExcellent communication skills both verbal and written.

    Education and ExperienceBachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial design, Mechanical Engineering Technology, or a related technical field is preferred. Experience equivalent to a degree may be considered.
    Minimum 5-8 years previous experience in a metal fabricating and/or complex mechanical assembly production environment required.
