Tankermen are responsible for the safe and efficient operation of assigned areas, ensuring that all activities are carried out in compliance with environmental regulations. They must possess a valid Merchant Mariners Document with a Tankerman endorsement for Grade B liquid cargos and be able to pass certification requirements of 46 CFR Part 197 Subpart C - Benzene.

The primary function on the Tankerman is to prepare barges for loading and discharging of oil, refined, and petrochemical products. This involves ensuring that all federal and state required documents are on board and in proper order. Communication skills are essential for effective collaboration with dock personnel during product transfer operations.

A key aspect of this role is participation in maintenance activities, including training newly hired employees aspiring to become Tankermen. Additionally, they must handle lines and rigging during tow building, locking, and docking activities.
