    POSITION SUMMARY:


    This position successfully leads projects to reflect company goals, specifically safety, delivery of project under budget and on-time while maintaining quality and customer relationships.

    This is accomplished by coordinating craft efforts and customer needs to successfully support overall project objectives. The incumbent assists the supervisors in mitigation strategies as soon as variances from schedule are identified. Daily progressing against daily plan is required to identify and mitigate variances.

    The individual will be required to learn aspects of project management to include initiating and negotiating change orders, setting up projects in company ERP system and invoicing the customer.

    The role reports to the Project Manager on an assigned project, but remains a direct report of the appropriate Director level manager.


    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Coordinates estimates into work plans and work schedules utilizing MS Project and ensures materials needed are ordered and delivered timely. Coordinates scope of work, Crafts workers and subcontractors needed to complete jobs on time and within budget.
    • Sequencing units of work to meet required delivery dates and maintain project profitability within or ahead of budget. Removes roadblocks identified by Production Supervisors / Manufacturing Supervisors and Production workers.
    • Promotes a safe working environment using daily safety briefs; promoting/enforcing PPE, discussing job hazard analysis, and accident prevention.
    • Supports supervisors in resolving any issues and eliminating barriers that may compromise the successful completion of the plan of the day and elevate those issues they are unable to resolve.
    • Supports the estimating and planning phases of the project by attending meetings and supporting the creation of the estimate and the quality of the plan with the Project Management Team.
    • Responsible for identifying and aligning external resources to support the execution of the project. These groups include any and all departments that interface with production such as Engineering, Procurement, Manufacturing and Facilities.
    • Primary liaison between the Project Manager and the working crews regarding communications relative to performance on safety, quality, budget and schedule.
    • Manages subcontract production through subcontractor's onsite supervisors.
    • Coordinates leads and workers in prioritizing activities/jobs to meet or exceed customer expectations while assuring best use of shipyard facilities and resources.
    • Utilizes Central Staffing services for trade specific issues and for establishing a manning plan for each project.
    • Identify and report (CFR) changes in scope of base work package by initiating/writing the CFR to clearly describe the problem and provide a recommended action/resolution.

    JOB SCOPE:


    The position operates within general parameters, but must use sound judgment and independent decision making when carrying out job responsibilities.

    Has the ability to influence and change existing protocols. Through subordinate supervisors, the position has overall responsibility for all production employees.

    He/she works with considerable independence following the guidelines and goals identified by the Project Manager on assigned projects in order to achieve production goals and benchmarks.

    Failure to meet deadlines could result in loss of business and rework.


    SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:
    The role may direct salaried and hourly supervisors and employees responsible for the day-to-day assignments. Employees have varying degrees of technical expertise. The level of supervision is more hands-on.


    INTERPERSONAL CONTACTS:
    The Project Superintendent works with many levels inside Ship Repair. This position represents the Company through formal and informal interactions with the customer.

    Interfaces with and takes direction from the Project Manager on assigned projects in generating executable work plans for supervisors performing the work.


    KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

    • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both oral and written for constant interaction with all departments and employee levels and outside customers.
    • Ability to lead, manage and motivate employees in a production environment.
    • Ability to develop and implement strategic plans.
    • Must have the analytical ability to research problem areas and special requests.
    • Must be a well-organized, detail and customer (internal and external) oriented self-starter.
    • Ability to read and comprehend work specifications, work orders, blueprints, contracts and technical publications.
    • Ability to handle competing priorities and deadlines effectively and respond well to last minute, high priority, time sensitive projects.
    • Ability to handle the pressure of constant interruptions.
    • Must be able to schedule, direct and organize work within a diverse department and coordinate work with other departments to maintain efficiency.
    • Must possess the ability to facilitate group decision-making, team building and conflict resolution. Must be able to react and perform in emergency situations.
    • Must be familiar with budgeting, estimating, planning, scheduling principles and material procurement.
    • Knowledge of OSHA and other environmental regulations.

    EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
    AA degree or equivalent work experience is required.

    Minimum five (5) years of experience in a heavy industrial/marine environment with increasing levels of responsibilities. Minimum five (5) years of experience in a supervisory capacity with increasing levels of responsibilities.

    The individual must have experience and thorough knowledge of shipyard production procedures, government regulations, ship repair methods and administrative procedures.

    He/she must have experience and a working knowledge of all specific operations of the department, including all machinery and tools.

    PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

    Work is conducted in a dynamic, fast-paced shipyard with moderate to loud noise levels from production activity in the shipyard.

    The individual will be required to be in production areas in yard and onboard ships. He/she must be able to walk to and from job sites.

    The person must be able to climb inclined stairways and vertical ladders; to enter confined areas and tanks; to work at heights.

    He/she may be required to work more than 8-hour shifts and weekend.

    The incumbent must be able to frequently bend, squat, crawl, twist and may be required to lift up to 50 pounds.

    There may be local travel and out-of-town travel (including air travel) up to 5% of the time with notice. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
