Summary You will serve as a HEALTH PHYSICIST (TRAINING) in the Nuclear Regional Training Branch (Code105.4KB), of the Deputy, Radiological Support Division (Code 105.4A) of the Radiological Support Division, (Code 105.4), of the Manager, Radiological Controls Support, (Code 105.1S), of the Radiological Control Office, (Code 105) of NORFOLK NAVAL SHIPYARD.

Duties * You will plan, develop, coordinate, facilitate, progress, and evaluate all radiological training courses related to health physics and applied radiological controls.

* You will review changes to health physics, naval radiological control requirements and local requirements and ensures changes are included in affected training and development.

* You will recommend, and institute changes to procedures utilized to improve effectiveness of training and efficiency of work.

* You will function as technical expert to professional and non-professional personnel on matters involving health physics and shop skills training.

* You will evaluate, modify, and advise on the health physics aspects of equipment or procedures that involve exposure to ionizing radiation, and conduct research and development of techniques for new radiological procedures.

You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.

* You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift.

* Work is performed in areas where potentially harmful physical and chemical agents are present (e.g. fumes, dust, heat, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation and chemicals). You will be required to participate in medical surveillance programs. * The position often requires irregular hours. * This position requires rotating shift work. * This position requires evening and weekend work. In addition to the Basic Requirements for this position, your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-11 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector.

Specialized experience must demonstrate the following:

• Experience interpreting and applying policies, regulations, directives, instructions, and procedures governing radiological training to develop recommendations for changes and ensure compliance with requirements.
• Experience understanding the functions and objectives of Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program and of the Radiological Control Office.
• Experience utilizing applied radiological controls to evaluate the adequacy, in actual work or training of monitoring procedures, protective clothing, dosimetry and potential environmental impact.
• Experience using all portable and waterfront laboratory instruments for detecting ionizing radiation to thoroughly explain the functions and analyze for proper usage.
• Experience evaluating radiation exposure data, dose assessment and risk evaluation, and knowledge of radiation protection standards, concepts, and regulations sufficient to assess radiological impact on personnel in or near the shipyard and recommend required corrective actions. GS-11

Specialized experience must demonstrate the following:

• Experience applying NAVSEA and local shipyard radiological control procedures, practices, and requirements sufficient to prepare, conduct and review the required training, and to identify non-compliance with established guidelines and to develop new and improved methods when prudent.
• Experience understanding the operating principles of naval nuclear reactors, reactor systems, health physics, and applied radiological controls.
• Experience applying advanced mathematics, statistics, radiobiology, nuclear physics concepts and knowledge of techniques used in detecting and measuring ionizing radiation with living tissue and non-viable material substances.
• Experience developing and implementing instructional courses for professional and technical level applications.

Applicants must possess: * Degree: natural science or engineering that included at least 30 semester hours in health physics, engineering, radiological science, chemistry, physics, biology, mathematics, and/or calculus.

• Combination of education and experience courses as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or other education; or certification as a health physicist by the American Board of Health Physics, plus appropriate experience and other education that provided an understanding of sciences applicable to health physics comparable to that described in paragraph A.
