    General Statement


    The Middle School principal works with the District Administrative Team to prepare each and every student in their school for higher education and success in the 21st century.

    The principal is the academic and the administrative leader of his/her school, and is responsible for communicating and supporting the vision of:


    • High expectations for the achievement of all students in their building
    • High Quality academic programs within all classrooms in their school, including curriculum, instruction, and assessment
    • School support and accountability systems including supervision and evaluation of employees, planning and implementing school improvement plans, leadership, and professional development for all staff members
    • Shared responsibility by the entire school community(faculty, staff, students and families) for achievement of the School and District Goals
    The Middle School principal reports to the Superintendent of Schools or his/her designee.

    Scope of Responsibilities


    • Vision, Mission and Goals - Guides and implements a community-wide shared vision of learning, based on SPS's vision and mission, beginning with communicating high expectations for student performance; reviews and refines vision regularly using various sources of information and continuous data analysis, and makes this vision reality through the creation and implementation of a School Improvement Plan. Promotes a positive, collegial environment which supports learning by students and staff.
    • Teaching and Learning - Ensures the success and achievement of all students by monitoring and continuously improving teaching and learning in their building. This includes ensuring that curriculum taught within their building align with District, Connecticut and national standards (ensuring coherence and alignment with secondary school curriculum and instruction). The principal is also responsible for directing professional learning within the building, calling upon support from the Curriculum and Instruction Team when necessary to provide appropriate support for staff members. Additionally the principal is responsible for leadership of the School Data Team, which monitors and evaluates student learning, using assessments and data and accountability strategies to improve achievement. Major areas must include monitoring and evaluating progress towards closing the achievement gap and overseeing Common Core State Standards implementation.
    • Organizational Systems and Safety - Aligns the middle school operations and resources to support academic programs and schools; supervises and evaluates certified and uncertified staff to guarantee the school is safe, efficient, and provides a highly effective learning environment.
    • Family and Stakeholders - Acts to ensure equity and access to resources and opportunities for all students and their families; collaborates with families and other stakeholders to respond to diverse community interest and needs
    • Ethics and Integrity - Acts ethically and with integrity; creates and sustains in their school an ethical culture committed to values, beliefs, and practices aligned with the SPS vision
    • Education System - Upholds and advocates for state, federal, and local policies that support excellence and equity in education

    Qualifications


    • Connecticut Professional Educator Certificate-Intermediate Administrator (092)
    • A master's degree from an accredited college or university in educational administration. Doctoral degree is desirable
    • Minimum of three (3) years administrative experience or related intern experience.
    • Demonstrated knowledge of middle school administration as well as the current best practices in middle school instruction.
    • Demonstrated experience in managing programs, staff supervision and school operations.
    • Experience in leading educational programs and reform, including the ability to deploy resources and prioritize and manage multiple projects; experience in curriculum development preferred
    • Knowledge and understanding of student and program assessment, data analysis, program development and evaluation, effective instructional strategies, learning assessment and diagnosis, and research related to teaching and learning
