    ABOUT THE POSITION: The Counselor is responsible for milieu management while engaging clients in a direct social service program. Time is divided among direct service, operations, and administrative responsibilities. The role ensures the efficient and effective operation of the program, involving client engagement, intake, assessment, advocacy, information and referral, problem-solving, crisis intervention, meal preparation, laundry, and light janitorial tasks. This is a unionized position represented by Local 8 of the Office and Professional Employees International Union (OPEIU).

    ABOUT THE PROGRAM: Jan & Peter's Place Women's Shelter offers a safe and warm place to sleep for 40 female-identifying guests dealing with homelessness. Guests receive dinner, breakfast, case management, and support services.

    • LOCATION: North Beacon Hill Neighborhood in Seattle, WA
    • REPORTS TO: Program Manager/Shift Supervisor
    • FLSA STATUS: Non-Exempt
    • SCHEDULE: Saturday-Sunday 7:30am-3:30pm; with monthly staff meetings on Wednesdays 3:30-5pm
    • MEAL PERIOD: Paid
    • SALARY RANGE: $21.22 per hour Step 1*

    *Step 2: 2.5% increase after 12 consecutive months of employment

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

    Social Services

    • Register and engage clients to assess needs and provide information and referral.
    • Build supportive relationships by showing warmth, empathy, and a client-centered approach.
    • Deliver meals, laundry, and cleaning services as scheduled.
    • Handle conflicts, provide crisis intervention, and refer to clinical services when necessary.
    • Maintain accurate case notes and records of client interactions.

    Leadership

    • Promote diversity, equity, and inclusion in all aspects of work.
    • Foster positive relationships with colleagues, projecting a favorable image of the organization.
    • Perform all duties effectively in alignment with agency policies.

    SUPERVISORY DUTIES

    None

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

    • Maintain confidentiality, respect for diverse backgrounds, and demonstrate de-escalation and crisis intervention skills.
    • Understand local resources for individuals experiencing housing instability.
    • Handle interpersonal situations effectively and seek support when needed.
    • Follow safety procedures, work in a fast-paced environment, and collaborate well in a team.
    • Communicate clearly, solve problems, and adapt to new technology.

    EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

    • Minimum 1 year of customer service experience required.
    • At least 1 year in a social/human service setting desired.
    • Familiarity with topics like housing instability, mental health, and substance use required.
    • Experience working where language barriers exist is required.

    PHYSICAL DEMANDS

    • Talk, hear, stand, walk, use hands, and occasionally push, pull, lift supplies up to 20 pounds.
    • Work includes sitting, using a computer, moving around various work areas, and standing.

    WORK ENVIRONMENT

    The work environment involves working closely with a diverse community including individuals facing various challenges. Close proximity to individuals served is expected. Safety precautions are in place for hazardous materials.

    This role requires onsite work only. Facilities are monitored for safety and security purposes.
