Description
Summary:
Reports to the Manager Inpatient Pharmacy Operations Rhode Island Hospital (RIH). Responsible for coordinating and supervising day-to-day medication preparation and distribution services and workflow processes at RIH.
Develops and maintains an effective work group consisting of direct report professional and supportive personnel to ensure that the Pharmacys medication preparation and dispensing operations are provided in accordance with RI Department of Health (DoH) Board of Pharmacy and federal Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) rules and regulations and comply with The Joint Commission (TJC) standards National Patient Safety Goals and established internal policies and procedures.
Participates in continuous quality improvement activities to ensure that the customers' expectations are met or exceeded. Participates in the development and implementation of policies procedures and budgets for Pharmacy Services.Responsibilities:
Coordinates and supervises day-to-day medication preparation and distribution services and workflow processes for inpatient pharmacy services. Implements interprets and provides consultation for inpatient pharmacy policies procedures and standards of practice.
Provides oversight to the preparation and repackaging of non-sterile pharmaceutical products according to computer-generated and/or pharmacist approved formulation record including proper technique labeling and expiration dating.
Reviews and analyzes day-to-day medication preparation and distribution services and workflow processes. Recommends and implements operational changes and new technologies to increase efficiency.
Reallocates resources to increase level of pharmacy services provided to inpatients.
Interviews applicants makes recommendations for hiring and evaluates personnel.
Responsible for retention performance enhancement and competency assessment of direct and indirect reports in collaboration with Inpatient Pharmacy Manager and other Supervisors.
Provides actionable feedback to employees to promote effective teamwork and satisfaction in the workplace in consultation with Pharmacy Manager and other Supervisors.
Participates in determining the qualifications and competence of department personnel and in the development of tools and standards to establish and improve medication preparation and distribution services competency levels of staff including orientation of new employees and in-service training.
Performs all the duties of a clinical pharmacist in preparing and dispensing medication providing drug information and other duties as required.
Demonstrates knowledge and skills necessary to provide care to neonate child adolescent adult and geriatric patients with consideration of aging processes human development stages and cultural patterns in each step of the care process.
Participates in development of short- and long-term goals for medication preparation and distribution services in consideration of Lifespans mission its values and its key business objectives.
Develops and administers staffing schedules for inpatient pharmacy services; coordinates schedules of other operational areas with Inpatient Pharmacy Manager and other Supervisors as needed.
Maintains computerized systems software programs and specialized dispensing equipment and technologies (e.g. Omnicell) utilized in medication preparation and distribution services and workflow processes in collaboration with Inpatient Pharmacy Manager other supervisors and Information Services. Serves as the gatekeeper for vaccine inventory and distribution.
Coordinates adherence to ongoing pharmacoeconomic and therapeutic monitoring programs and other efforts of the pharmacy to ensure safe and effective medication use practices.
Provides timely and accurate communication both written and verbal as appropriate regarding medication preparation and distribution operational changes and continuous quality improvement activities including goals and objectives of the Pharmacy.
Participates in the education and training of pharmacy students during their Introductory Pharmacy Practice Experience (IPPE) and Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experience (APPE) rotations completes applicable competency and evaluation documentation.
Maintains knowledge of and expertise in leading edge developments in pharmacy therapeutics inpatient services programs and innovative technology by participation in ongoing independent study education-related professional activities and affiliations.
Prepares papers for presentation at professional organization meetings submits manuscripts for publication in professional journals and authors articles for the Pharmacy web site.
Performs other administrative duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS-EDUCATION:
Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy or Doctor of Pharmacy degree from an accredited college of pharmacy.
Advanced study in pharmacy or health-care related field such as MBA MHA MPH MS or completion of ASHP accredited PGY2 Health System Pharmacy Administration and Leadership residency preferred.
Prior to start date possesses current unrestricted licensure as a licensed pharmacist or as a licensed 90-day temporary pharmacist in the State of Rhode Island.
Obtains full licensure prior to expiration of 90-day temporary pharmacist license then possesses and maintains current unrestricted licensure as licensed pharmacist in the State of Rhode Island.
QUALIFICATIONS-EXPERIENCE:
Minimum of five years progressively more responsible related experience preferably gained in a similarly diverse and operationally complex health care environment.
Knowledge of area/specialty specific technology including but not limited to electronic health records pharmacy information systems automated dispensing technology software equipment and automation.
Demonstrates excellent written and verbal interpersonal and communication skills.
SUPERVISION:
Supervisory responsibility for up to 35 FTEs.
