    Position Description
    Under supervision and training from a Cytogenetic Technologist, the incumbent prepares, examines, and analyzes chromosomes found in biological specimens such as amniotic fluids, bone marrow, and blood, to aid in diagnosis and treatment of genetic diseases. May perform advanced technical duties in the diagnostic study of cells for the purpose of recognition and classification under supervision and training of a Cytogenetic Technologist. At the successful completion of the training program, the incumbent will be encouraged to take the ASCP exam. During the two-year period, trainees work on a lab rotation learning each aspect of the genetic testing.

    Major/Essential Functions
    Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
    1. Specimen pick up and log-in, registering patients on patient record system and chart preparation. Receives, organizes and processes clinical specimens accurately. Identifies worksheet, computer, and specimen problems and demonstrates ability to either resolve or elevate to technologists/supervisor appropriately
    2. Assist supervisor with supply orders and inventory management.
    3. Selects and prepares specimen and media for cell culture.
    4. Reads and understands all Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) related to the department and adhere to all department rules and protocols
    5. Assists with tissue culture, slide-making, harvesting, culture set-up, reagent preparation, equipment maintenance, loading/unloading automated scanner and karyotyping procedures.
    6. Develops microscopic analytical skills through multiple phases of microscope training, both brightfield and fluorescence microscopy.
    7. Participates actively to prepare and analyze FISH preparations, selecting cells, counting and analyzing each under the microscope, and prepares several flex images per case.
    8. Assists with microarray wet lab including DNA extraction, Gel Electrophoresis, purification, PCR, related techniques and applications and develops analytical skills to analyze aCGH cases.
    9. Prepares testing equipment, assists with cleaning or performing equipment preventative maintenance as required
    10. Assists with transcription of test results.
    11. Participates in billing and assist the supervisor with sending fee sheets, populating and generating invoices
    12. Assist supervisor with client relation including answering phone calls, send out specimens, sending supplies to clients, sending reports by faxing, emailing and scanning reports to EMR.
    13. Attends department meetings and company in-service trainings to improve knowledge on testing and systems
    14. Participates in Quality Control and Quality Assurance programs required by CAP/CLIA.

    Required Qualifications
    BS or BA degree in a life science field is required. One to three years' experience equivalent to a Laboratory Technician may also be considered.
