    Job Description

An NIH-funded Postdoctoral Fellow position is available at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York City to participate in studies on the function of ligand activated nuclear hormone transcription factors (particularly vitamin D and glucocorticoid receptors, VDR and GR) in mammalian erythropoiesis at steady-state and under conditions of stress. We are currently investigating the possible involvement of circadian rhythm and inflammation pathways in the mechanisms by which VDR and GR regulate erythroid progenitors. These studies may lead to the identification of novel molecular targets in erythroid progenitors that can be exploited to develop new therapies for anemias and other red cell disorders. The ability to modulate ex vivo expansion or differentiation of RBC progentors in new ways would have clear clinical utility. Interested candidates must have a PhD or equivalent and should have a strong record of accomplishment and experience in molecular and cellular biology. Expertise in hematopoiesis and/or gene regulation desirable. Experience with fluorescence microscopy, flow cytometry, mouse husbandry and mammalian cell culture desirable but not essential. Applicant must be highly motivated and fluent in English, collegial and able to work independently, with at least one recent first author publication in a reputed international journal. Salary support based on research experience and accomplishments.

    Responsibilities

    1. Conduct and design experiments independently under the direction of lab Principal Investigator (PI) using advanced research techniques; perform basic molecular and cellular biology methods such as basic molecular subcloning and real-time RT-PCR, mammalian cell culture, mouse husbandry, flow cytometry, and microscopy. Must be able to read, understand, and interpret scientific literature relevant to the research.
    2. Report research progress to PI orally, at laboratory group meetings, and in written progress reports and maintain a current knowledge of relevant literature.
    3. Maintain good written laboratory records and contact with collaborators.
    4. Nurture collaborative relationships with fellow scientists within the institution, locally, nationally and internationally.
    5. Summarize experimental data and assist in drafting publications under the direction of the PI. Assist the PI with publications by extracting and compiling moderate to complex research data from the relevant literature; assist in interpreting the data; write drafts of and edit manuscripts.
    6. Master computer and technical skills necessary for experimental execution as well as data input and analysis.
    7. Mentors and trains less experienced research staff and graduate students in research techniques and use of equipment.
    8. Performs other related duties as assigned.
    Qualifications
    • A Ph.D. or equivalent.
    • Proficiency in molecular and cell biology (including subcloning of DNA, PCR, isolation of RNA), basic protein methods (e.g. immunoblotting), flow cytometry, and mammalian cell culture required.
    • Expertise in hematopoiesis and/or gene regulation desirable.
    • Expertise in computational biology (e.g. RNAseq, scRNAseq, ATACseq) desirable.
    • Excellent communication skills in written and oral English are essential.
    Required materials:
    • brief cover letter detailing past research accomplishments and future research goals
    • current CV (with bibliography)
    • contact information for 3 faculty references
