    Island Quest Day Camp joins the agencies of Commonpoint Queens, Friedberg JCC, Suffolk Y JCC, & Gural JCC in collaboration to utilize years of camping expertise to come together as one camp located in Wheatley Heights at the historic Henry Kaufmann Campgrounds. Island Quest Day Camp is open to campers ages 4-15 and will provide a unique, outdoor, unplugged opportunity for campers as they create their own adventure through our 3 unique Quest program areas; Seek, Innovate, and Compete. Island Quest Day Camp elevates camper voice and camper choice as young people are encouraged to build their own schedule while challenging themselves to explore new things in a safe and supportive camp environment.
    Camp Dates:
    • 2024 Season: June 27-August 23
    • Monday to Friday: 8:30 am to 4:30 pm
    • (Including late nights, trips, and other evening events deemed required) Available for all pre-season staff training (selected days in Spring 2024) Must be able to attend every day of camp

    JOB SUMMARY: The role of the Aquatics Director is to oversee all aspects of the water program including the swim program, swim lessons, and all water activities, including any related trips off-site. Maintain all relevant logs and records and notify the Associate Camp Director or Camp Director of any conditions that would make aquatic activities unsafe. They are responsible for training and overseeing all Water Safety Instructors (WSI's).

    Pre-Camp Job Responsibilities:
    • Attend and successfully complete all required training, program workshops, staff meetings, and supervisory sessions.
    • Test WSI's skills at pre-camp trainings.
    • Hire and ensure certification of all WSI staff.
    • Responsible for managing the certification status of all Aquatic qualified staff in IQ (even those who work primarily in other roles).
    • Retain copies of all swim staff's certifications and a Google spreadsheet of their date of expiration. This includes WSI certificates, First Aid CPR for Professional Rescuer, Lifeguarding, Lifeguard management, and RTE certificates.
    • Train camp staff on proper pool procedures at Staff Orientations.
    • Organize and help run(when necessary) deep water testing of camp staff.

    During Camp Job Responsibilities:
    • Be present and on duty for all days that the pool is open while summer camp is in session.
    • Instruct WSI's in day-to-day procedures.
    • Direct all water activities.
    • Initiate a water safety program.
    • Test and classify the swimming ability of campers and camp staff as necessary.
    • Develop and operate a well-planned program of instruction in swimming and water safety.
    • Supervise staff to carry out instruction and WSI duties during swim periods and other activities.
    • Review all camper health concerns to best assist the needs of all campers while in or on the water.
    • Schedule staff to complete daily maintenance duties as warranted.
    • Maintain the facilities, equipment, and general swim area, which should be in neat and clean order at all times. Keep equipment and facility under lock and key when not in use.
    • Monitor changing areas and keep track of cleanliness.
    • Review and evaluate off-site water trips.
    • Complete and file reports including camper ability levels, accidents, and water testing records.
    • Send out at least 2 sequences of swim gen reports to families throughout the summer.
    • Oversee all WSIs and evaluate their ability to work with campers and swim instruction skills on a weekly basis.
    • Knowledge and compliance with DOH standards. Relay any concerns to administrative staff.
    • Provide end-of-camp evaluation of summer camp aquatic program and recommendations for improvements.
    • Perform other duties as assigned for the betterment of the campers, program, and camp.

    JOB QUALIFICATIONS:
    • Current certification as a WSI (Water Safety Instructor).
    • Current certification as a Lifeguard from the American Red Cross or equivalent standards or willing to attend required training.
    • Current certification in First Aid, professional rescuer CPR, and AED child and adult required or willing to attend required training.
    • Experience working with and supervising young children, pre-teens, and teenagers.
    • Good record-keeping skills.
    • Previous supervisory experience.
    • Have an understanding of the capabilities, needs, and interests of children.
    • Reliable, responsible, good judgment, patience, and a sense of humor.
    • Ability and desire to work in a camp setting and outdoor water space (e.g. pool, waterfront, water activities off-site, etc.).
    • Ability to communicate clearly, to be flexible and adaptable, and to remain calm in an emergency.
