    Description
    Job Summary:

    Trauma Registrar performs under the direct supervision of the Nurse Director of Trauma Services. Analyzes information in the electronic medical record and identifies patients meeting the Mississippi State Department of Health Trauma Registry Inclusion Criteria. Initiates performance improvement documents on identified trauma patients. Abstracts patient information from the electronic medical record and enters accurate data into the Trauma Registry. Assists in maintaining comprehensive, computerized, trauma registry data base in accordance with established standards of the Mississippi State Department of Health, American College of Surgeons Trauma Quality Impovement Program, and Forrest General Hospital Trauma Service. The Trauma Registrar enhances patient outcomes by supporting performance improvement activities and is responsible for a systematic approach to collecting, aggregating, Tri-coding, and analyzing data to support decision-making.Is knowledgeable in ICD-10 coding and the abbreviated injury severity scale.Collaborates with hospital managers, staff, and teams to generate recommendations for improvement in trauma care. Collaborates with the credentialing and finance departments for data related to trauma team physicians and the Trauma Care Trust Fund application process. Writes and runs trauma reports in the Trauma Registry Report Writer as needed for hospital administration and leadership. Provides support to other hospital trauma programs and particiapates in injury prevention, community outreach, and trauma education as needed.Involved in trauma care at the local and state level by participation on committees and councils. Submits data to the State Department of Health and American College of Surgeons Trauma Quality Improvement Program for benchmark reporting.Cross trained to work in the Trauma / Acute Care Surgery Clinic as needed. Demonstrates knowledge and skills to appropriately communicate and interact with the patients, families, and visitors of all age groups while being sensitive to their cultural and religious beliefs. Coordinates the clerical and office functions for Trauma Services including organization of health information, performance improvement documents, physician and program compliance data, and physician call pay. Performs duties within approved practices and exercises independent judgment within pre-determined guidelines. Performs other job duties as assigned by the Director of Trauma Services.

    Performance Expectations:
    • Demonstrates the process for identifying trauma patients by using the trauma registry inclusion criteria
    • Demonstrates understanding of the trauma registry including input of correct patient data, running reports, analyzing data, Tri-code, and submitting trauma registry data to the State Department of Health and American College of Surgeons Trauma Quality Improvement Program (TQIP)
    • Participates in trauma performance/patient safety program activities and meetings.
    • Has knowledge of medical terminology and tri-coding capabilities.
    • Knowledgeable in Trauma/ Acute Care Surgery Clinic front desk duties. Demonstrates the ability to effectively interact with staff and patients by appropriately scheduling patient appointments and performing mini-registration during clinic hours. Demonstrates the ability to manage physician charge tickets, collect patient fees, manage the clinic cash drawer, and make monetary deposits
    • Maintain knowledge of departmental and hospital policies
    • Demonstrates the ability to locate approved documents and assure that departmental form inventory is current.
    • Demonstrates effective use of UKG and manages timekeeping for the department
    • Calculates contract payments based on contract verbiage and submits check requests.
    Qualifications:

    Education/Skills
    • High school diploma required.
    • Anatomy Course and/or medical coding knowledge preferred.
    • Within 1 year of employment, must have ICD-10 Coding Course, Trauma Registry Course, and AAAM AIS Scaling Course.
    • Certified Abbreviated Injury Scale Certification preferred after 1 year of employment.
    Work Experience:

    Must have a working knowledge and experience of data processing systems, data analysis, report

    writing, medical terminology, ICD-10 coding, abbreviated injury severity scale, and tri-coding.

    Organizational ability, teamwork, critical thinking, and strong communication skills are required.

    Knowledge of computer programs such as Microsoft Word, Excel, and Access preferred.

    Mental Demands:

    Exceptional oral and written skills are required to relate effectively to hospital and medical staff. The individual must have the ability to type and be familiar with the rules of spelling, grammar, and punctuation. The individual must have the ability to use a computer display station, copier, telephone, personal computer, and calculator. Working knowledge of medical terminology is necessary. The individual must have a high energy level and be capable of handling pressure situations both mentally and physically. Basic medical coding knowledge preferred.
