Summary

This position is located within the Rehabilitation Section of the Rehabilitation and Extended Care Service Line. The incumbent is a staff Physical Therapy Assistant who works under the supervision of a Physical Therapist to provide services that promote the prevention, remediation, and rehabilitation of acute and chronic physical dysfunctions for a wide range of patients.

Duties

Major duties include, but are not limited to the following:

Completes a preliminary review of patient data (including medical history, prior rehabilitation therapies and current plan of care).

To ensure proper care, provides continual assessment of patients through observation and interview of the patient, staff, and caregivers.

Monitors patient response to care and adjusts the program to suit the needs and abilities of the patient.

Makes recommendations regarding services needed or modifications to the plan to the primary Physical Therapist and other members of the Interdisciplinary Team.

Monitors the appropriateness of assistive devices and makes recommendations when appropriate.

Administers standardized tests and measures to monitor for progress. This includes manual muscle testing, goniometry, vital signs, balance testing and/or other functional measures.

Always maintains patient and staff safety by practicing safe patient handling techniques by utilizing appropriate safe patient handling equipment.

Schedules veterans for treatment, considering priority and frequency of care and coordinating schedules with other members of the treatment team.

Documents performance and timely treatment and achievement of treatment goals, assuring a high level of productivity and cost-effective treatments are provided.

Demonstrates skills in written communication and assures all documentation is done in a timely manner as per documentation policy for all veteran visits.

Functions on a multidisciplinary team, representing the Rehabilitation Department by communicating directly with team members. Participates in staffing and discharge planning meetings as needed.

Continues to maintain and learn advanced skills by attending continuing education courses and training when applicable.

Lead or assists other members of the Rehabilitation Department with process improvement activities.

As requested, provides, and arranges in-service training lectures on various treatment techniques, treatment plans, and other topics relevant to Physical Therapy. Evaluates, revises, and develops training materials, aids, methods and plans which may involve students and other REC staff to include therapies, nursing, PACT providers, social work, psychology, integrative health and other ancillary staff.

May provide direct supervision and training to students assigned to the Physical Therapy Department; working closely with the student to identify areas of personal interest, strengths, and weaknesses incorporating these factors into established training protocol to assure achievement of training goals and maintenance of veteran treatment objectives.

Maintains required supplies, reporting needed repairs, and maintaining general orderliness of areas to which assigned.
