    Position Overview:

    As a Special Education Teacher in a Therapeutic Classroom, you will work with students who have various exceptionalities and emotional/behavioral challenges.

    Your primary responsibility is to create a supportive and inclusive learning environment that fosters the academic, social, emotional, and behavioral development of each student.

    You will collaborate with a multidisciplinary team, including a Principal, Social Worker, Behavior Intervention Strategist, Paraprofessionals, and other educators, to address the unique needs of each student and help them achieve their educational goals.


    Duties & Responsibilities:

    • Develop Individualized Education Plans (IEPs):
    • Assess students' academic, social, emotional, and behavioral needs.
    • Collaborate with the IEP team to develop personalized education plans for each student, ensuring goals are specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound.
    • Demonstrate expertise in completing and interpreting Functional Behavior Assessments (FBAs) for the purpose of creating Behavior Plans based upon principles of applied behavior analysis.
    • Implement Specialized Instruction:
    • Adapt curriculum and instructional strategies to meet the diverse learning styles and abilities of students with disabilities.
    • Provide differentiated instruction and accommodations to support students' academic progress and skill development within the Iowa Core Standards.
    • Utilize evidence-based practices and instructional technologies to enhance learning outcomes.
    • Implement services outlined in each individual's IEP with fidelity
    • Create a Positive Learning Environment:
    • Establish and maintain a safe, supportive, and nurturing classroom atmosphere conducive to learning.
    • Implement behavior management strategies and positive reinforcement techniques to promote appropriate behavior and social skills.
    • Foster a sense of belonging and acceptance among students, encouraging mutual respect and empathy.
    • Collaborate with Staff:
    • Work closely with a variety of professionals to address students' diverse needs.
    • Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings, providing input and insights into students' progress and challenges.
    • Collaborate with general education teachers to ensure students are progressing towards grade level skills and/or standards.
    • Monitor Progress and Evaluate Outcomes:
    • Collect data on students' academic and behavioral performance, monitoring progress towards IEP goals.
    • Use formative and summative assessments to evaluate student learning and adjust instructional strategies accordingly.
    • Communicate regularly with parents/guardians, providing updates on students' progress and recommendations for support at home.
    • Complete all paperwork appropriately and in a timely manner, including updating progress monitoring.
    • Maintain accurate and complete student records and prepare reports on students and activities as required by laws, district policies, and administrative regulations.
    • Professional Development and Collaboration:
    • Stay abreast of current trends, research, and best practices in special education and therapeutic interventions.
    • Participate in professional development activities, workshops, and training sessions to enhance knowledge and skills.
    • Collaborate with colleagues to share expertise, resources, and strategies for supporting students with disabilities.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to -+ Sit, stand, speak, hear, see, and walk to carry out routine duties.


    • Must be able to occasionally lift, move, or push items of 50 lbs. such as assisting children or moving/rearranging furniture.
    • Must be able to supervise students in all types of weather.
    • Meet multiple demands from several people and interact with the public and other staff.
    • Must be able to implement Crisis Prevention Intervention strategies, including appropriate physical restraint procedures and escorting.

    Special Qualification Desired:

    • Endorsed with Strat II LD/BD
    • Previous experience working with students with behavior disabilities, preferably in a therapeutic or alternative setting.
    • Knowledge of special education laws, regulations, and best practices.
    • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively with students, parents/guardians, and colleagues.
    • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
    • Patience, empathy, and a genuine passion for helping students with diverse needs reach their full potential.
    • Ability to remain calm and respectful when students are in crisis.
    • Proven record of building rapport with culturally diverse students to ensure each child reaches his/her full potential.
    • Good attendance & punctuality are a must to ensure that the duties and responsibilities of the job are performed successfully.
