    The New England Conservatory's Preparatory School (NEC Prep) seeks an experienced and enthusiastic music educator and conductor to serve as its Director of Orchestras beginning in the academic year. The Director of Orchestras (DO) provides artistic leadership for large instrumental ensembles at NEC Prep and oversees the training and artistic development of all orchestra students. The DO is charged with maintaining the standard of excellence among the conducting staff through interaction, evaluation, example, curricula and artistic leadership. The Director of Orchestras is an ambassador to the greater community including professional musicians, private instrument instructors, public and private school music teachers, and prospective students.

    JOB SUMMARY:

    The Suzuki Violin Teacher will join a small team of trained Suzuki teachers at NEC Prep (New England Conservatory Preparatory School) Suzuki Program and will be responsible for teaching Suzuki group classes and Suzuki private lessons. The program consists of 30 weeks of Saturday private lessons, group classes, concerts, and outside performances. The teacher must be available to teach at NEC on Saturdays and have some weekday afternoon/evening availability for teaching.

    Essential Functions of the Role

    • Teach Suzuki group classes on Saturday mornings at NEC Prep.
    • Conduct Suzuki private lessons for students at NEC Prep.
    • Collaborate with the team of Suzuki teachers to develop and implement effective teaching strategies.
    • Create a supportive and encouraging learning environment for students.
    • Prepare students for performances, concerts, and recitals throughout the program.
    • Attend faculty meetings and participate in professional development activities as required.
    • Provide regular progress reports and feedback to students and parents/guardians.
    • Stay updated with current trends and developments in Suzuki violin teaching.

    Qualifications and Characteristics

    Candidates should bring many of the following skill sets and experiences:

    • Successful completion of SAA Suzuki Registered Training in Books 1-4+ (through Book 8+ preferred).
    • Minimum of 5 years of teaching experience in Suzuki violin instruction.
    • Master of Music Degree or equivalent qualification in violin performance or music education.
    • Strong knowledge of Suzuki teaching methods, repertoire, and techniques.
    • Proficient violin playing skills and ability to demonstrate techniques effectively
    • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to effectively interact with students, parents/guardians, and colleagues.
    • Ability to work collaboratively in a team-based teaching environment.
    • Dedication to creating a positive and nurturing learning environment for students.
    • Flexibility in scheduling to accommodate both Saturday and weekday teaching commitments.

    Fall Position:

    The selected candidate will be responsible for teaching one or more Suzuki group classes on Saturday mornings and taking on private lesson students in need of placement for Fall and Spring New faculty will be evaluated by Suzuki coordinators, String Department Chair and Director of Prep.

    Application Requirements:

    • Curriculum Vitae (CV) detailing relevant qualifications including Suzuki private lesson and group class teaching experience, other teaching experience, and Suzuki training. (Please list Suzuki training, private lesson levels, specific group classes and levels you have taught.)
    • Brief biography (Bio) highlighting personal background, teaching philosophy, and relevant achievements.
    • Two letters of reference specifically addressing the candidate's teaching abilities.
    • Videos of private lesson and group class teaching, each 20-30 minutes in length. Include two private lessons of different levels and one or two group classes (at different levels if submitting two).
    • Candidates will be asked to complete an in-person demo teaching lesson, group class and interview which will include playing Suzuki repertoire from Books 1-4.
    • Commitment to continue Suzuki pedagogy training, group class training and observation through level 8.

    Schedule and Compensation

    • Job Type: Part-Time
    • Rate:

    ○ Private Suzuki Violin Instructor: $61.50 per hour

    ○ Suzuki Class Instructor: $72 per hour

    • Schedule Each Week: Saturdays plus some weekday afternoons and evening
