    General Responsibilities:
    The mission of the Babcock Center is to empower people with lifelong disabilities to enjoy life by promoting abilities and respecting choice. The Residential-Based Behavior Technician works directly with residents in a group home and performs a variety of duties assisting residents in accomplishing daily life activities and achieving personal goals as outlined in their plan of care, with the application of behavior analytic principles and programming.
    Under general supervision of the Behavior Analyst (Under 21), the Residential-Based Behavior Technician provides necessary programming and behavior support to individuals with lifelong intellectual disabilities.
    Duties and Responsibilities:
    • Assists people who live in the residential home to complete supported routines in personal hygiene, menu planning, grocery shopping, food preparation, family style dining, grooming, dressing, safety, cleaning, bathing, diapering, shaving, dental and oral hygiene, deodorant use, financial management, bed making, dining, laundry, household chores and any other needs identified by the Interdisciplinary Team. The Residential Behavior Technician will assist individuals only to the extent that assistance is needed to promote greater independence. The Residential Behavior Technician will focus on supporting and training each person to become more independent or to slow down the rate of regression.
    • Duties will be performed in a manner consistent with the principles and strategies utilized in applied behavior analysis under the direction of a behavior analyst, including use of teaching procedures like shaping, chaining, task analysis, operant learning, verbal operant training, reinforcement, antecedent strategies, function-based treatment, and others as trained.
    • Performs the above duties with or for the supported person when they are unable to perform the task independently or if the person refuses to do so, causing a living situation that threatens the health and safety of the person.
    • Encourages supported persons to manage their own lives by offering choices and respecting the individual's personal preferences and goals.
    • Demonstrates Babcock Center's motto, which is Promoting abilities and respecting choice.
    • Becomes knowledgeable of and adheres to Babcock Center's policies and procedures.
    • Attends scheduled staff meetings and other meetings as appropriate.
    • Attends and participates in in-service trainings as scheduled.
    • Reports any problems with safety, security, health issues or behavior issues to supervisor. For health issues that need immediate attention, the Residential Behavior Technician calls 911 and notifies the nurse.
    • Maintains and documents accountability on all supported persons inside and outside of the home.
    • Maintains overnight accountability at out of town conferences and trips if supported people choose to attend such events, at the same level as set by the Interdisciplinary Team.
    • Works in other houses or locations if needed, as assigned by supervisor. This may include covering shifts at other locations, sitting with a supported person in the hospital, or taking persons to appointments, work, school, etc.
    • Continues at work until relieved, including during inclement weather and emergency situations. Departs work at the end of the shift only when he/she has been properly relieved of duty.
    • Safeguards the confidentiality of all people receiving supports.
    • Carries out instructions issued by supervisory staff concerning medically-prescribed diets, grocery shopping to adhere to medically-necessary diets, supply needs, special medical problems, after-school academic tasks like homework if applicable, special monitoring and other similar duties as assigned.
    • Completes both electronic and paper documentation on each shift to include: T-Logs, S-Comms, GERs (General Event Reports), training data, DAR's, activity rosters, vehicle mileage logs, vehicle cell phone logs and others as directed.
    • Ensures that people are supported to dress appropriately for the weather.
    • Sits at the dining table with supported persons during meals to assist with the meal and to model proper table manners (Not including SLP I and SLP II locations.)
    • Becomes knowledgeable of the dietary needs of persons supported so as to guide each person to be aware of and abide by dietary restrictions if any, prepare food with proper textures and to consume nutritional supplements if needed.
    • Ensures overall cleanliness of the home by supporting the occupants of the house to perform household chores or performing those household chores in situations when residents are unable to unwilling to do so.
    • Encourages community involvement by assisting people to find interesting, meaningful activities and by transporting individuals to and from work and recreational leisure activities outside of the home.
    • Participates and assists in recreation/leisure activities in the home with those receiving supports.
    • Implements the Plan of Supports for each person supported to include: objective training, medication self-administration, behavioral supports and other needs as planned by the Behavior Analyst and Interdisciplinary Team.
    • Maintains a valid SC Driver's License with a good driving record in order to drive company vehicles. Reports any moving vehicle citations to the supervisor and Human Resources, whether incurred on or off duty.
    • Completes the Babcock Center's Pre-Service Orientation and maintains certification and training in the identified and required areas.
    • Complies with random drug testing and SLED checks as directed by supervisory personnel. Notifies Human Resources of any changes to their Law Enforcement Record.
    • Performs other duties as assigned.
    • Consult with Director of Behavior Support and/or Coordinator on a regular basis regarding all aspects of needs arising in the facility involving resident behavioral, training, medical, and psychological needs.
    • Crisis intervention.
    Working Condition:
    • Working in facility serving individuals up to age 21 with Developmental Disabilities.
    • Sitting, standing, bending, lifting, and possible physical interventions with supported persons that may be combative and in crisis at times.
    • Multi-tasking during work occurs frequently and often causes interruptions.
    • Involved with supported persons, family members, personnel, etc, under all conditions/circumstances.
    • May encounter hostile and emotionally-upset supported persons, family members, etc.
    • Communicates with the direct support staff, clinical staff, and other department supervisors.
    • Willingness to work beyond normal working hours, and in other positions temporarily, when necessary.
    • Attend and participate in continuing educational programs.
    • Subject to falls, burns from equipment, infectious diseases, odors, physical intervention throughout the workday.
    • Subject to lifting, carrying, and restraining clients.
    Qualifications:
    • High school diploma, GED, or equivalent required.
    • Must be at least 18 years of age.
    • Valid driver's license is required
    Specific Requirements:
    • Must have initiative and momentum to carry out assigned tasks with limited supervision.
    • Possess the ability to make independent decisions when circumstances warrant such action.
    • Possess the ability to deal tactfully and harmoniously with personnel, supported persons, family members, visitors, government agencies, and general public.
    • Ability to interpret and apply the policies and procedures of behavior intervention or seek assistance from supervisor as needed.
    • Must maintain approved driving privileges with Babcock Center.
    • Must be able to maintain professionalism at all times, be enthusiastic, be task oriented, organized, team player, take recommendations and frequent feedback, as well as be willing implement interventions in all situations within the Residential Behavior Technician scope of practice.
    • Must complete documentation, including ISP data for training objectives, t-logs, GERs, behavior plan ISP data, and other data collection s assigned.
    • Must be able to utilize training in behavior analysis consistently; must seek training and feedback when new situations arise.
    Physical Requirements:
    • Must be able to move intermittently throughout the workday.
    • Must be in good general health and demonstrate emotional stability.
    • Must be able to demonstrate appropriate techniques for restraint of clients.
    • Must possess physical ability to make appropriate interventions.
    Hazards/Potential Hazards:
    Biological/infectious wastes, cleaners/solvent, climbing, disinfectants/glutaraldehyde, electrical, ergonomic hazards: i.e. lifting, pushing/pulling, twisting, hazardous wastes, latex allergy, sharp (needles, broken glass etc), soaps/detergent, and wet surfaces.
    Typical Physical Demands:
    Sitting, bending, standing, stooping, reaching, frequent lifting, and manual dexterity sufficient to operate standard office machines. Must have normal range of hearing and vision.
    Typical Mental Demands:
    Must be able to deal with stress associated with fast-paced work environment and multi-tasking. Formulate decisions and act upon them. Adapt to changing work situations. Grasp and apply new ideas. Communicates with various personalities at all levels. Maintain confidentiality of all sensitive information.
