- Develop and expand a strategic knowledge base on various themes such as trade, agriculture, competitiveness, firm financing, and financial markets for low- and middle-income countries, ensuring research is aligned with private sector development policies.
- Oversee the creation of economic research publications, reports, and academic papers within specific areas, providing guidance and quality assurance to the team, with a focus on influencing business, government, and thought leaders.
- Lead communication strategies within designated areas, manage publications, blogs, conferences, and engage with academic and business leaders, and establish a Community of Interest among economists and researchers at IFC.
- Work with Operations Management to capture and disseminate insights from IFC's operations, contributing to knowledge sharing within IFC and the WBG, while engaging with external partners and institutions.
- Supervise the work of PhD economists and researchers within the Department, ensuring high standards of quality, program design, and promoting professional development.
- Foster technical excellence within the Department through a culture of learning, innovation, and knowledge exchange, ensuring efficient resource utilization and timely delivery of outputs.
- PhD in Economics or related field preferred; Master's degree in Economics with over 12 years of relevant experience in economics and finance research.
- Demonstrated commitment to the mission and values of the WBG and IFC.
- Strong analytical skills, with expertise in econometrics, survey design, economic modeling, and policy development for private sector growth.
- Proven ability to tackle complex policy issues, innovate approaches, and publish impactful reports related to private sector development.
- In-depth understanding of trade, agriculture, financial markets, and firm financing, particularly in emerging and low-income economies.
- Leadership experience in team building, mentoring, and effective communication both orally and in writing, establishing networks and representing IFC externally.
- Proficient in collaborative environments within complex global organizations, integrating subject matter knowledge into broader frameworks.

In the fiscal year 2023, IFC allocated a record $43.7 billion to private companies and financial institutions in developing nations, harnessing the potential of the private sector to enhance people's well-being amidst the challenges posed by global crises.
The department is looking to hire a Principal Economist specialized in areas such as trade and supply chains, agriculture, financial markets, and competitiveness, to spearhead essential research, produce new analytical content, and oversee the activities of other economists and analysts within the department.
The ideal candidate will be a driven and dynamic professional with outstanding analytical capabilities, relevant policy experience, expertise in private sector development and applied research, a solid history of publications, and a collaborative mindset to collaborate with colleagues across various departments.
The role will be based at IFC's headquarters in Washington, D.C. and will report to the Director, CER.
