    Job Description

    Rate of Pay: $17.00 starting pay

    Status: Closes July 31, 2024

    This position is part of the Distribution or Collection Division in the Water and Wastewater Department and involves the maintenance and repair of water and wastewater systems. Reporting to a designated Water and Wastewater Foreperson, the role is at a journey level.

    Apprentice pay rate: $17.00 or System Operator pay rate: $17.88 – 20.75

    • Repairs broken water or wastewater mains and related service connections.
    • Replaces, raises or lowers water or wastewater appurtenances as assigned.
    • Cleans out obstructions from wastewater mains and services using a high-pressure water jetting machine.
    • Installs water and wastewater taps for new services.
    • Services fire hydrants, including conducting flow and pressure tests.
    • Performs high-pressure water and chemical cleaning of wastewater mains.
    • Inspects and cleans water and wastewater pump stations and tank sites, installing valves and performing clean-outs as needed.
    • Operates various construction equipment like backhoes, dump trucks, and tapping machines.
    • Maintains master meters and concrete settings.
    • Performs landscaping duties around pump stations and tank sites.
    • Works on call on a rotational basis.
    • Carries out other assigned duties.

    Preferred Qualifications:

    • High school diploma or GED with at least one year of experience as an Apprentice System Operator or similar water and wastewater construction role, including heavy equipment operation.
    • Must possess a 'Class A' Georgia Commercial driver's license within six months of hire.
    • Clean seven-year driving history with no DUI's in the last five years.
    • Obtain a Georgia State Board Distribution or Collection certification within two years of training completion.
    • Attain trenching, confined space, and shoring certifications within the probationary period.
    • Acquire a Georgia Department of Transportation Flagging certificate within the probationary period.
    • Knowledge of safety rules and procedures in water and wastewater construction.
    • Ability to dig ditches with a backhoe around utility lines of other services.
    • Skills to install and maintain water and wastewater systems.
    • Readiness to work on a rotating on-call basis.
