    Description

    GENERAL JOB DESCRIPTION:
    This position is responsible for supervising all main laboratory activities (mechanical, chemical,
    process/environmental) in support of customer and environmental requirements, NAS quality
    standards and product certifications.


    ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
    May perform any or all Mechanical Lab duties as follows:

    • Investigates and implements standard testing procedures, as needed by NAS for customer
    and environmental requirements, as well as product certification and in-house quality
    procedures.

    • Develops product samples collection and testing procedures to assure in process product
    quality and customer specification. Organizes and defines laboratory performance
    requirements surrounding all laboratory work activities. Requires timely turn-around analysis
    and communication of results to operations.

    • Oversees all testing of products sold by NAS to assure company conformance to customer
    specifications and quality. Tests and certifies spares and supplies purchased by NAS are in
    compliance with company quality standards.

    • Develops testing techniques for operations (acid solution analysis, steady solution, alkalis).
    Trains technicians and operators in the utilization of operating equipment within standards to
    promote improved quality and productivity.

    • Develops and implements laboratory safety and chemical handling manual to prevent
    injuries/accidents, improve working conditions and reduce costs.

    • Trains, develops and implements laboratory quality procedures in order to obtain laboratory
    accreditation, customer satisfaction and credibility and to avoid utilization of outside testing
    resources. Insures all testing procedures are in compliance with OSHA, EPA, ASTM, MIN
    STD and ASME requirements.

    • Implements laboratory safety directives to prevent injuries/accidents improve working
    conditions and reduce costs.

    • Provides fir cross-training of lab employees to ensure all mechanical and chemical lab
    employees perform most NAS procedures. Provides for continuous training on new
    equipment or new techniques.

    • Supervises all laboratory technicians, leaders and group leaders. Instructs personnel in job
    requirements, company rules and practices. Requires subordinates conformance and
    application to established company rules and practices with regard to employee attendance,
    performance, training, safety and the like.

    • Assists with training and implementation of laboratory quality procedures.
    • Performs regular personal performance assessments for the MEL Group Leader.

    SUPPLEMENTAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

    • Addresses equipment failures and problems through the AS400 work order system and
    direct contact with the NAS maintenance department.

    • Reviews output and results from the mechanical lab.
    • Other duties as required by the lab supervisor or technical manager.
    • Participation in continuous improvement programs.
    • Promotes safety and performs routine safety assessments and area reviews, taking corrective
    action when needed.


    MINIMUM EDUCATION, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

    • Minimum of a B.S. Degree in Metallurgical/Material Science, Chemical Engineering,
    Chemistry, Physics, or Mechanical Engineering.

    • Two (2) years of relevant work experience.

    PHYSICAL ABILITIES REQUIRED:

    • The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
    • Mobility in plant.
    • While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly required to
    stand for prolonged periods of time.

    • The employee is frequently required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel and
    reach with hands and arms.

    • Visual ability with or without correction.
    • Communication abilities.

    HEALTH AND SAFETY:

    • Work in compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and regulations.
    • Follow Company safety rules.
    • Report the absence of or defect in any protective equipment or clothing to the Manager or
    Supervisor immediately.

    • Use or wear the equipment, protective devices or clothing that is required to be used or worn

    depending on job duty being performed:
    Safety boots (steel toe)
    Safety glasses/goggles
    Gloves (nitrile, leather)
    Wristlets
    Hearing protection
    Nuisance dust mask
    Hard hat

    • Report to the Safety Coordinator, Lab Supervisor, or Technical Manager any contravention of the
    Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations or Company policy.

    • Must follow all Lock out Tag out (LOTO) guidelines for designated machines.
    • Maintain a clean and safe work area.

    WORK ENVIRONMENT:

    • Work in compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and regulations.
    • Clean, well-ventilated, and safe work areas.

    RELATIONSHIPS:

    • Reports to the Laboratory Supervisor
    • Has line authority over all Laboratory Technicians, Leaders and Group Leaders.
    • Has freedom of contact throughout the company, particularly with Operations Manager
    (product properties, facilities operation within environmental regulations); Quality
    Engineers/Supervisors (product properties, ect.); Planning Supervisor (notification on
    non-conforming products.)

    • Externally, has contact with Independent Labs, Contractors and EPA personnel over
    testing techniques, equipment, equipment calibration, technical audits, ect
