    We're currently searching for an Embedded Counselor to join our Thomas E. Cook Counseling Center team in Blacksburg, VA to help us in our mission.

    Located in the Corps, the embedded counselor will serve a dual role of providing direct clinical and educational services to cadets while also providing consultation and training opportunities for the Commandant Staff, RWB, and ROTC faculty and staff.

    The position will report to the Director of the counseling center and will work closely with residential wellbeing coordinators and commandant staff to learn and participate in the community culture.


    The embedded counselor will provide direct clinical services to undergraduate cadets including initial consultation and assessment, crisis interventions as needed, individual and group counseling, psychiatric referrals, drop-in office hours, and consult with faculty, advisors, and staff regarding cadet mental health concerns.

    Additional activities include participation in orientation for new cadets and new cadet week training, educational programming and outreach events; attendance at Commandant staff meetings and ROTC departmental coordination meetings as needed; and other collaborations to be determined.

    The Cook Counseling Center provides mental health services to the student community of Virginia Tech.

    The embedded counselor works with a multidisciplinary staff of counselors, psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, nurse practitioners, psychology interns, psychiatry residents, and practicum students to deliver services that maintain the highest standards of professional and ethical care.

    The center has a central location with embedded counselors on the Blacksburg campus, in our Roanoke facility, and at the Washington D.C.

    Metro-area campus.

    The center is accredited by the International Accreditation of Counseling Services and the internship training program by the American Psychological Association.

    HERE'S WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THIS ROLE1) You'll be joining the Thomas E. Cook Counseling Center team; a department centered on student mental health and well-being through brief focused therapy interventions and outreach.
    2) You'll be reporting to the Director, in a Regular twelve-month, 100% administrative professional appointment.
    3) You'll be responsible for providing direct clinical services to undergraduate cadets including initial consultation and assessment, crisis interventions as needed, individual and group counseling, psychiatric referrals, drop-in office hours, and consult with faculty, advisors, and staff regarding cadet mental health concerns.

    Required Qualifications

    • A master's degree in counseling or social work plus two years of experience or a doctoral degree in clinical or counseling psychology, from an APA-approved program with an APA-approved internship
    • Be licensed eligible as a licensed professional counselor, licensed social worker or licensed clinical psychologist in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Supervision may be provided with a goal of licensure within 1-2 years depending on degree.
    • Experience in providing focused therapeutic interventions with a multidisciplinary team.
    • Experience and interest in collaboration with residence life, academic departments, faculty, and staff.
    • Training and experience in delivering culturally competent interventions.
    Preferred Qualifications

    • Prior military experience and/or experience working in a military training environment such as a senior military college.
    • Experience working with undergraduate students.
    • Experience in outreach and educational programming, e.g., suicide prevention gate-keeper programs.
    • Previous training and/or experience in a college mental health setting
    • Experience with managing crisis situations, completing risk assessments, and disposition planning to address safety risks
    • Well-developed counseling and clinical supervision skills
    • A self-motivated, self-directed commitment to the highest ethical standards of professional practice
    • The energy to flexibly manage the professional demands of the role while maintaining positive and healthy relationships
    • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with colleagues with acceptance, respect, and trust
    • Excellent oral and written communication skills
