Vice President, Talent and People Operations - Portland, United States - Penn Foster Inc

    Default job background
    Description
    About the Company

We are a stealth renewable energy and ocean technology startup committed to rapidly developing and deploying technologies that will ensure a sustainable future for the Earth by unlocking the vast energy potential of its oceans.

    About the Job

We are developing a technology ecosystem that will provide civilizational levels of affordable renewable energy.

Our People Operations function will be critical to building a high-performing culture, attracting and retaining the excellent people we will need in order to deploy this technology at scale.

As VP, Talent and People Operations, you will be responsible for leading, shaping, and scaling all human resources systems and processes.

These systems and processes are essential components of the organization's "operating system." Getting them right will require you to be a strategic partner in defining, documenting, and bringing to life our culture of high-performing innovation and delivery.

This will involve building and running the systems, structure, and team needed to support compensation and benefits, talent management, and employment law compliance at a rapidly growing company.

You will independently drive the development and execution of strategic initiatives to continuously improve recruiting, employee onboarding and offboarding, feedback and decision making systems, leadership training and development, HRIS system integration, benefits selection, compensation reviews, policy and procedure administration, and more.

We expect you to be our internal subject matter expert on all things "HR." You have thoroughly studied best practices, but understand that each company and situation is unique.

Rather than relying on a rigid playbook, you believe in delivering sensible solutions that are tailored to the specific needs and challenges of the organization.

You understand that people are the core driver of a company's long-term success, and recognize that excellent people and talent processes are critical to attracting and retaining them.

Getting things done is in your DNA, and you will execute quickly and excellently. You understand the importance of building reliable processes enabled by best-in-class technology.

Finally, you thrive in a creative, scrappy, and collaborative environment in which the best ideas change the company's direction on a regular basis.

Our staff have worked at organizations such as SpaceX, Blue Origin, Boeing, Virgin Orbit, Virgin Galactic, Google, Amazon, Microsoft, New Relic, Bridgewater, Raytheon, Disney Imagineering, and the US Army and Air Force, as well as research universities, startups, and small companies across a range of industries.

We are organized as a public benefit corporation and are backed by leading venture capital firms, private investors, philanthropic investors, and endowments.

We strive to be the best team on the planet, and we compensate our team members accordingly.
    Responsibilities

Lead all "HR" functions including payroll and stock option administration, comp and benefits, feedback and review systems, employee retention, compliance, and all aspects of the employee life cycle.

Act as a strategic partner and collaborate with other leaders across the organization to help develop and shape the company's "operating system" that fosters a culture of world-class innovation and execution.

Build and lead a team of excellent recruiting and operational HR professionals whose mission is to continuously reduce anything that serves as a barrier to productivity.

Partner with hiring managers to deliver a scalable recruiting strategy which finds world class talent, accurately assesses candidates against the company's needs/standards, and ensures an excellent candidate experience.

Work with other company leaders to keep the hiring process and list of open roles in sync with the changing strategic and tactical needs of the company.

Continuously track technological advancements and trends in the field of HR to ensure the most advanced and efficient systems are in place.

Maintain multi-state compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations, recommending best practices and implementing policies and programs to ensure compliance.

    Required Qualifications
10+ years experience in a cross-functional people operations role, or 5+ years with evidence of rapid growth in responsibilities.

7+ years leading multiple people operation functions, including comp & benefits administration, performance management and feedback systems, strategic hiring and assessment, recruiting operations, employee relations, onboarding/offboarding, workers' compensation, and employment leave practices.

Hands-on knowledge of people operational objectives and best practices.
Current with relevant employment laws and regulations and experienced with demonstrated experience integrating changes into day to day operations.
Experience building, improving, and scaling processes from the ground up.

Ability to contribute to high-level organizational strategy, set HR strategic direction in alignment with organization's priorities, and drive implementation to achieve results.

Ability to visualize future needs and build high-performing teams to meet them.
High standards with demonstrated excellence in execution.
    High commitment to customer service.
Confidence working independently to determine requirements, identify solutions, and drive a project to completion.
A drive to actively seek out feedback and translate it into opportunities for improvement.
    Desired Qualifications

7+ years leading multiple people operations functions, including compensation, equity & benefits administration, performance management, recruiting operations, employee relations, onboarding/offboarding, employment law compliance and workers' compensation compliance.

Extensive expertise in a diverse array of HR software systems, along with hands-on experience in their selection and implementation at the operational level.

Demonstrated experience with organizational design, change management and workforce planning.
General understanding I-9 processing requirements and legalities of hiring foreign nationals
SHRM-CP or SHRM-SCP or similar certification or accreditation.
Experience in a highly technical engineering environment.

Strong preference for experience in a Start-up during a rapid growth phase as a first HR hire responsible for building out the HR function.

The above qualifications are desired, not required.

We encourage you to apply if you are a strong candidate with only some of the desired skills and experience listed.

    Additional Requirements
Ability to work at our Portland, OR headquarters.
Occasional travel in support of business goals.
Intermittently able to work longer hours and weekends to support critical needs.

While we expect a lot of each other, we also offer a high degree of autonomy and work-life balance, including unlimited PTO and flexible working hours.

    Compensation and Benefits
If hired for this full-time role, you will receive:
    Cash compensation of $150,000 - $200,000.
    Equity in the company.

We're all owners and if we're successful, this equity should be far and away the most valuable component of your compensation.

A benefits package that helps you take care of yourself and your family, including:
    Unlimited paid time off
Health insurance (the company pays 100% of gold level PPO plan for full time employees, their partners, and dependents)
Dental insurance (the company pays 33% for full time employees and 100% for their partners and dependents)
Vision insurance (the company pays 100% for full time employees, their partners, and dependents)
Disability insurance (the company pays 100% for a policy to provide long term financial support if you become disabled)
Ability to contribute to tax-advantaged accounts, including 401(k), health FSA, and dependent care FSA
Relocation assistance to help facilitate your move to Portland if needed.
