Nature of Work
The Transportation Appraiser Trainee performs entry-level level work in the Department of Transportation conducting research of courthouse records, natural resources, and various real estate transactions in preparation for the appraisal of residential, commercial, industrial, natural resources, or personal properties to be taken for right-of-way purposes. Required to complete all relevant classroom and field training. Extensive travel is required in this classification. Performs related duties as required.

Typical Duties and Responsibilities
• Attends training by the Department of Transportation, following a formal schedule of classroom and field training designed to prepare the trainee for real property appraisals
• Participate in an apprentice program to become a licensed appraiser
• Acquire knowledge in real property rights, acquisition, right-of-way engineering, and survey methodology
• Establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, property owners, state and local government officials, and the general public
• Travel may be required; therefore, a valid driver's license may be required
Required Skills and Knowledge
• Knowledge of the real estate industry, real estate appraisal, right-of-way acquisition, relocation, real estate management, or engineering and survey methodology
• Knowledge of report writing methods, data collection and presentation, and statistical analysis pertaining to property valuation
• Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships
• Ability to review detailed records and information, gather pertinent information, and present information in a format appropriate to the scope of work
