    Summary
    Assistant Professor (full-time, 9-month, tenure-track) in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics. A focus of this position is Actuarial Science.

    The Department enjoys a nationally ranked doctoral program that offers a full range of graduate programs including two doctoral degree programs (PhD in Mathematics and PhD in Statistics) and undergraduate major specializations in actuarial science, statistics, data science, pure math, and applied math.

    Actuarial science is the largest of the undergraduate specializations, and many graduate students take graduate-level courses in actuarial science. In addition, the Department participates in the recently established interdisciplinary PhD and MS programs in Data Science. The Department has 29 full-time faculty members, more than 70 graduate students and about 100 undergraduate majors. The faculty are committed to excellence in teaching, research and service.

    Essential Functions

    • Teach courses in Actuarial Science and other courses in statistics or mathematics as needed using inclusive pedagogies and courses designed with a student learning focus.
    • Maintain and further develop a coherent research agenda that leads to publications in leading journals in Actuarial Science, Mathematics or Statistics; actively seek external research funding; interact with faculty and students to maintain strengths of the programs.
    • Champion the undergraduate major in Actuarial Science by recruiting and advising students, supervising co-curricular activities, and recommending how endowed funds targeted for actuarial science are used.
    • Collaborate with the Insurance and Risk Management program in the College of Business.
    • Provide service to the department, college, and university, as well as to the profession at the state, national or international level.

    Minimum Qualifications

    • Doctoral degree in Actuarial Science, Mathematics, Statistics, or related field (e.g., Data Science, Insurance and Risk Management). ABDs are eligible to apply, but all requirements for the doctoral degree must be met by the start of employment (August 2024).
    • Teaching experience as a TA.
    • Demonstrated scholarly work in Actuarial Science, Mathematics, Statistics, or related area (e.g., Data Science, Insurance and Risk Management) such as doctoral dissertation or research presentations at national or international conferences.
    Preferred Qualifications


    • Experience teaching Actuarial Science, Mathematics, Statistics, or Business Analytics, as the instructor of record
    • Demonstrated research productivity through one or more publications in peer-reviewed journals or book chapters in Actuarial Science, Mathematics, Statistics, or in a closely related area (e.g., Data Science, Insurance and Risk Management).
    • Experience seeking external research funding.
