Definition
Under general administrative program supervision from the Clinical Director of Dentistry and the Deputy Directors, is accountable for assisting the department director in implementation and operation of the dental hygiene program, that includes preventative, rehabilitative and community service in a highly complex and diverse setting to Native Americans. Responsibilities include ensuring the quality management of dental care delivery to patients and families, managing and directing hygienist staff, in conjunction with the operational leaders under the directive of the Dental Clinical Director. In addition to supervising the hygienist team, the dental hygienist supervisor will lead the department in organizing educational information for assisting patients with developing and maintaining good oral health, while also providing direct oral hygiene services and care to our patients. This is treated as an FLSA-Exempt.

Examples of Tasks
Tasks:
- Provides oversight of dental hygienists as assigned by the dental director. Evaluates performance of assigned dental clinic personnel.
- Provides oversight of hygiene supplies, instruments, and equipment; collaborates with the Practice Manager and Dental Assistant Supervisors on ordering, inventory control, standardization of materials, and ensuring operatories are fully stocked and operational.
- Organize and plan the tasks & work assignments to be accomplished, set and adjust priorities and prepare schedules.
- Efficiently run day to day clinical flow with collaboration with DA Supervisors and Practice Manager. Construct workflows for hygienists to efficiently allow time for high quality treatment for our patients.
- Identifies developmental/training needs and opportunities for hygiene personnel.
- Develops and maintains goals and objectives of assigned delegates to facilitate smooth dental operation for assigned hygiene staff.
- In conjunction with the Practice Manager, organizes, coordinates, and manages community outreach events to promote oral health education, preventive services, and community engagement.
- Provides oversight and coordination of hygiene integration programs with the Pediatric Department, Behavioral Health Department, and other current or future departments to support interdisciplinary, patient-centered care.
- Collaborates with the Practice Manager to develop, implement, and maintain a strong recall and re-care program for established dental patients to improve continuity of care, preventive service utilization, and oral health outcomes.
- Monitors effectiveness of outreach, integration, and recall initiatives and recommends workflow or process improvements to enhance patient access, efficiency, and quality of care.
Assists the Clinical Director of Dentistry and Deputy Director(s) with the development, implementation, and ongoing adherence to accreditation policies, protocols, and standards related to hygiene services, ensuring compliance with applicable regulatory and accrediting bodies.
Provides comprehensive hygiene care to the community population and assists clinical directors with oversight of contract dental hygiene services in a tribal community environment.
In conjunction with the Clinical Director of Dentistry, Deputy Director(s), and practice manager, implements and makes adjustments to the hygiene clinic operations to better facilitate the quality of dental care provided to the community.
- Provides consultation when reviewing hygienist/provider privileges for new hires or contracted dental services in the director's absence.
- In conjunction with the Deputy Director(s) and/or practice manager, responsible for oral hygiene scheduling decisions in the department director's absence.
- Lead hygiene team with assisting clinical operations in examinations and treatment for commonly encountered dental health issues diagnosed by dentists; including imaging, perio grading, prophylaxis, perio maintenance, etc. when necessary as privileges allow.
Direct Patient care requirements:
- Administers local anesthesia.
- Completes preliminary hygiene examinations on new dental patients. Reviews patient's medical and dental history for evidence of past and present conditions such as medical illnesses and use of drugs which may complicate or alter dental hygiene treatment. Examine the teeth and surrounding tissues for evidence of plaque and periodontal disease and charts findings. Inspect the mouth and throat for evidence of disease such as oral cancer. Interprets routine x-rays to identify tooth structures, calculus, and abnormalities such as cavities and periodontal defects. Administers local anesthesia.
- Develop and implement individualized hygiene care plans for patients. Assesses the nature and extent of dental, periodontics and associated conditions and pathology in dental outpatients and assesses dental condition and needs of patients by analyzing medical records and prescribed protocol to formulate effective therapeutic treatment plans.
- Documents dental history or chief complaint of patient; records and reports pertinent observations and patient reactions to dental staff, as appropriate. Documents lab procedures and ensures follow up on results.
- Assists with or institutes emergency measures for sudden adverse developments during treatment of patients; independently performs emergency dental procedures.
- Sets up and prepares dental equipment and instrumentation in accordance with established regulations and guidelines. Exposes radiographs on patients including bitewing, periapical and panoramic x-rays. Adjust voltage, amperage, and timing of x-ray equipment. Selects the type of radiograph that will be necessary for patient's mouth. Positions film and machine to ensure coverage of area to be x-rayed.
- Prepare reports and assistance as required with patient reception, telephone calls, routine triage and other office duties. Performs patient education, discharge planning and patient/family teaching under the supervision of a qualified dentist
Performs other job-related duties as assigned to maintain and enhance departmental operation.
Maintains secure facility, ensuring confidential access to patient medical records.
Ensure patient dental records are maintained in accordance with SRPMIC guidelines.
Along with all other employees, they are responsible for maintaining security of the facility.
Assistance of oversight responsibility with the Clinical Director of Dentistry for establishing and maintaining quality control measures to ensure final product conforms to standards set forth by the American Dental Association and National Board for Certification of Dental Technicians.
Assists in providing direction and coordination of periodontal specialist referrals in collaboration with Department Director and periodontist.
Works collaboratively with other health care professionals and clinic personnel to establish and maintain standards of care for the community, evaluating on a regular and recurring basis. Reports discrepancies in clinical workflows and patient/provider safety concerns while also serving as the department's oral hygiene advisor to the Clinical director based on outlined objectives.
Preferably obtains and maintains certification as a periodontal EFDA instructor, in accordance with IHS regulations, to train and oversee Expanded Function Dental Assistants (EFDAs) in periodontal procedures and ensure regulatory compliance.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Other Characteristics:
- Knowledge of the culture, customs, traditions, history and government of the Salt River Pima- Maricopa Indian Community.
- Knowledge of principles of dental hygiene, dental surgery and associated tasks in a large high-volume dental office environment.
- Knowledge of current methods and principles of oral hygiene and prevention, diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the mouth.
- Knowledge of principles and priorities of personnel management and effective supervision and leadership.
Knowledge of relevant healthcare federal laws/regulations and standards (preferably accreditation and Indian Health Services).
Skill in application of modern methods in preventative oral hygiene in order to evaluate, advise and manage the delivery of care.
- Skill in projecting future requirements for dental resources (i.e., staff, equipment, training, etc.) in order to effectively manage the hygienist team.
Skill in effective communication both verbally and in writing.
Ability to communicate and maintain effective working relationships with healthcare personnel to provide quality care.
- Ability to manage multiple and diverse people and tasks in stressful situations.
- Ability to multitask and use proven organizational skills to balance multiple projects.
- Ability to engage in critical thinking and creative problem solving.
- Ability to plan, organize, and provide direction to dental personnel.

- Ability to meet and comply with HIPAA/Confidentiality policies and procedures and ability to handle highly confidential and sensitive patient information.
Minimum Qualifications
Education & Experience – Associate's degree from accredited dental hygiene program required (bachelor's preferred).
- Applicants must be currently licensed to practice dentistry in a State or the District of Columbia. Arizona State License will be given hiring preference. All candidates MUST submit proof of current, active and unrestricted license for verification. 5 years' clinical experience in practice with demonstrated leadership skills.
Equivalency: Any equivalent combination of education and/or experience that would allow the candidate to satisfactorily perform the duties of this position, will be considered.
Underfill Eligibility: An enrolled Community Member whom closely qualifies for the minimum qualifications for a position may be considered for employment under SRPMIC Policy 2-19, Underfill.
