    The Rocky Mountain Regional Veterans Administration Medical Center (RMRVAMC) Spinal Cord Injury and Disorders (SCI/D) Inpatient Rehabilitation Program provides comprehensive rehabilitative care for patients with spinal cord disorders.

    This Center is a state-of-the-art facility designed to provide lifelong rehabilitation and comprehensive care for all eligible individuals with traumatic or non-traumatic spinal cord injury, multiple sclerosis (MS) with spinal lesions, and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).

    The Spinal Cord Injury and Disorders (SCI/D) Nurse practices as a Registered Nurse in the Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) Service.

    This is a SCI/D center that specializes in:
    1) efficient delivery of rehabilitation;
    2) sustaining medical and surgical care;
    3) patient and family education;
    4) psychological, social, and vocational care;
    5) research;
    6) education; and
    7) professional training in the continuum of care for persons with SCI/D.

    Patient populations served include:

    a full range of care for all enrolled Veterans who have sustained a spinal cord injury or have a stable neurologic impairment of the spinal cord.


    Typical patient populations served include:

    Spinal Cord Injury (SCI); Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS); Multiple Sclerosis (MS); as outlined by SCI/D VHA Handbooks and Directives.

    These patient populations are likely to present with complex conditions that may require acute stabilization; acute and sub-acute rehabilitation; acute and sub-acute medical and surgical care; preventative care; respite care; hospice care, as appropriate.

    The SCI Nurse is accountable when assigned as a primary nurse for a defined group of patients for the entire episode of care or shift.

    Based on education and experience, may be assigned responsibilities as preceptor, charge nurse, or unit shift leader.

    The SCI Nurse provides age-specific care for adult , older adult and geriatric (over 75) patients who have sustained damage to the spinal cord throughout the continuum of their lifetime, which incorporates stabilization after injury, rehabilitation, unrelated medical/surgical conditions, health maintenance and long term follow-up of the injured individual, as well as psychosocial support including the family of significant others.

    The SCI Nurse promotes achievable independence and adjustments conducive to health, assisting the patients and their families to look beyond the disability.

    Their supportive interventions reduce the stigmas of disability and help individuals reestablish and maintain control over all aspects of their lives.

    The SCI Nurse collaborates with interdisciplinary teams to promote efficient, effective, individualized care to assist the patient in achieving optimal function and health.

    Members of the interdisciplinary team vary depending on the needs of the patients. The SCI Nurse promotes the VA Mission, Core Values, Strategic Goals and Objectives.
