    Summary:


    AlexRenew's Engineer/Planner provides engineering and urban wastewater system planning support, overseeing wastewater needs identification and planning, design, and construction of projects for AlexRenew's interceptor sewers, pumping stations, and other related wastewater system infrastructure.

    With general supervision, the Engineer/Planner II works with a diverse group of internal and external stakeholders for successful project outcomes.


    Essential Duties & Responsibilities:


    Plan for capital work and coordinate renewal and replacement projects with team members for AlexRenew's interceptor sewers, pumping stations, and other related wastewater system infrastructure to support long-rate strategies and initiatives.


    Prepare and present briefs, reports, and proposals/bids for services as related to AlexRenew's interceptor sewers, pumping stations, and other related wastewater system infrastructure.


    Manage assigned portfolio of consultant-led contracts for the planning, design, and construction of new and/or upgrades to AlexRenew's interceptor sewers, pumping stations, and other large collection system infrastructure to meet schedule, budget, quality, regulatory, and organizational needs/outcomes.


    Review and coordinate review of other team members, of proposals, bids, engineering plans and specifications, and technical reports and studies.


    Review developer design plans for proposed City development projects (residential, commercial, multi-family, etc.) in Alexandria through City Development Special Use Permit (DSUP) process to analyze for and mitigate impacts to AlexRenew assets.


    Conduct field investigations and as needed attend on-site meetings with developers, City staff, and/or other external stakeholders as related to AlexRenew interceptor sewer and pumping station assets.

    Attend City design review meetings and planning meetings and present to and communicate with members of the community


    Note:
    meetings may occur in the evening hours and on weekends.

    Actively promotes safe behaviors and health awareness at all times in the execution of daily tasks

    Supports organization goals and objectives including those related to sustainability, climate adaptability and resiliency.

    Other duties as assigned.


    Qualification Requirements:
    To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the education, experience, knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.     Education and/or Experience:
    Bachelor's degree in civil or environmental engineering, urban planning, architecture, environmental studies, or related discipline preferred.


    Five (5) years of progressively responsible experience relating to the planning, design, construction, and/or operation of sewer systems, pumping stations, or wastewater treatment plants desired.

    A combination of education and professional experience as described above will be considered.

    A valid Virginia Engineer in Training (EIT) or Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred.

    Some experience in project management preferred.

    Knowledge (some combination of the following) preferred:


    Knowledge of and interest in sewer system infrastructure, including planning, design, and construction; master planning; neighborhood development; and engineering principles.

    Understanding of all phases of a project's lifecycle from pre-design through construction administration

    Proficiency in engineering plan review and an understanding of project permitting, particularly the City of Alexandria's development permits.

    Knowledge of applicable local, state and federal codes, laws, and standards as related to wastewater infrastructure.

    Skills (some combination of the following):

    Effective communicator (oral and written) on technical subjects to various internal departments and external stakeholders including customers.

    Proficient in Microsoft Office and SharePoint. Understanding of ArcGIS and AutoCAD preferred.

    Adept in managing time effectively, particularly when working on several projects.

    Proficient in reading and interpreting building plans and drawings.

    Physical Demands:


    The physical demands here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

    While performing the duties of this job, typical of office work, include lifting up to 10 pounds, and minimal pushing or pulling.


    Work Environment:


    The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee may encounter on an occasional to regular basis while performing the functions of this job.

    Environmental conditions necessitate following strict safety guidelines and use of Personal Protective Equipment.

    While performing the duties of this job, the employee performs work indoors in a climate controlled environment, with some outdoor work required for routine project site visits.
