Job Summary
The Safety Coordinator is responsible for developing, implementing, and maintaining safety programs to ensure compliance with all regulatory requirements and to promote a safe, healthy work environment within a blown film extrusion manufacturing facility. This role focuses on hazard identification, incident prevention, employee training, and continuous improvement of safety performance in a high-risk industrial setting.
Key Responsibilities
Regulatory Compliance & Safety Programs
- Ensure compliance with all applicable OSHA, EPA, state, and local safety regulations.
- Develop, implement, and maintain plant-wide safety policies, procedures, and work instructions.
- Maintain required safety documentation, permits, logs, and records (e.g., OSHA 300/300A).
- Coordinate regulatory inspections and serve as the primary site contact for safety audits.
- Conduct regular safety audits, job safety analyses (JSAs), and risk assessments for blown film extrusion operations.
- Identify hazards related to:
- High-temperature extrusion equipment
- Rotating machinery and nip points
- Compressed air and pneumatic systems
- Resin handling, additives, and chemicals
- Forklift and material-handling traffic
- Recommend and implement corrective and preventive actions.
- Develop and deliver safety training programs for employees, including:
- New-hire safety orientation
- Lockout/Tagout (LOTO)
- Machine guarding
- Confined space awareness
- Emergency response and evacuation
- PPE usage
- Promote a strong safety culture through employee involvement, safety meetings, and toolbox talks.
- Lead investigations of workplace accidents, near-misses, and unsafe conditions.
- Perform root cause analysis and implement corrective actions.
- Track safety metrics, trends, and key performance indicators (KPIs).
- Prepare safety reports for management review.
- Maintain emergency response plans for fire, chemical spills, equipment failure, and medical emergencies.
- Coordinate emergency drills and response training.
- Ensure availability and readiness of emergency equipment (eyewash stations, fire extinguishers, spill kits).
- Participate in plant continuous improvement initiatives with a focus on safety.
- Support ergonomic assessments and improvements.
- Collaborate with maintenance, production, and engineering teams to integrate safety into processes and equipment design.
Education & Experience
- Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Occupational Safety, Industrial Safety, Environmental Health, or a related field (preferred).
- Minimum 2-5 years of safety experience in a manufacturing environment.
- Experience in plastics, blown film extrusion, or similar industrial operations strongly preferred.
- Strong knowledge of OSHA regulations and manufacturing safety standards.
- Familiarity with extrusion equipment, resin handling, and industrial machinery safety.
- Ability to conduct effective training and communicate safety requirements clearly.
- Strong investigative, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office and safety management systems.
- OSHA 30-Hour Certification
- Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or Associate Safety Professional (ASP)
- First Aid / CPR / AED
- Ability to work in a manufacturing environment with exposure to noise, heat, and industrial equipment.
- Ability to walk the production floor, climb ladders, and conduct inspections.
- May require occasional off-shift or weekend work to support operations.
