    I. Position Title: Head LifeguardII. Summary of Overall Purpose of Position: Under supervision of the Pool Manager, performs a variety of first-line supervisory and advanced pool-side and water safety duties as needed to assure safe use of pool facilities. Monitors water activities to assure safety and prevent accident or injury to patrons. Assumes responsibility for pool operations and enforces pool and facility rules and regulations in the absence of the Pool Manager.

    III. Duties

    • Performs as the head lifeguard; provides training to less experienced lifeguards.
    • Observes patron activities; enforces rules, disciplines or ejects patrons for rule infractions; ensures compliance of policies and procedures by lifeguards.
    • Assists in the development of lifeguard work schedules; assures shifts are properly staffed; monitors performance and makes recommendations affecting employment status, such as advancement, discipline and discharge.
    • Performs first aide as needed to assist individuals suffering injuries; performs water rescues as needed to prevent mishaps or drowning.
    • Maintains constant alertness and awareness of patron activities to minimize exposure or threat of incident or accident.
    • Directs and performs general upkeep and custodial duties; cleans facility floors, mops, sweeps, vacuums, polishes, etc.; cleans pool decks; monitors water temperatures and chemical balances testing chlorination and "Ph" levels, takes water samples; may make minor equipment adjustments to assure proper temperature and chemical standards.
    • Performs opening and closing procedures, assures all systems are properly functioning, secure doors and other accesses; assures shift duties are completed

    Education: Must be a high school graduate or equivalent.

    Experience: Two (2) years paid lifeguard experience or previous lifeguard supervisory experience. Licenses/Certifications: Must be Red Cross certified as a lifeguard trainer and water safety instructor (WSI) Must be Red Cross certified in first aid and CPR for the Professional Rescuer.

    Special Requirements: None

    Knowledge of: The principles and methods used in teaching swimming; lifesaving including modern method of approaching, breaking holds, and carrying people; standard techniques of resuscitation and other first aid measures; and swimming pool sanitary regulations and their use.

    Ability to: Demonstrate advanced swimming skills; establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, and demonstrate good judgment and decision making.

    Skill in: Skill in strong swimming and lifesaving.

    Communication Skills: Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

    Tool, Machine, Equipment Operation: Rescue equipment, communication equipment to communicate with the public and other lifeguards, medical equipment, etc.

    Working Conditions

    Physical Demands: Tasks require a variety of physical activities, generally involving muscular strain, such as walking, standing, stooping, sitting, reaching and lifting. Talking, hearing and seeing essential to performance of daily tasks. Common eye, hand, finger dexterity needed in performance of essential duties. Mental application utilizes memory for details, verbal instructions, emotional stability, discriminating thinking and creative problem solving. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.

    Working Conditions: OSHA related hazards may be encountered under controlled conditions. While performing the duties of this job, the employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts, pool mechanical systems. The employee occasionally is exposed to west and dry conditions, fumes, toxic or caustic chemicals. The employee could be exposed to blood borne pathogens. The noise level is moderately loud in the facility. The employee may be exposed to stressful situations as a result of human behavior.
