    Key Functions


    • Assumes the lead role in the absence of the Laboratory Supervisor
    • Assists in determining work priorities and assuring personnel coverage.
    • Works independently, follows standard operating procedures and policies and uses good judgment, particularly those requiring supervisory skills.
    • Prepares histology materials using established departmental procedures and demonstrating high quality technical skills. Performs all laboratory duties following established safety guidelines.
    • Assists with all aspects of specimen processing including sorting, identifying, accessioning and labeling specimens blocks and slides. Uses laboratory informatics system to document workflow, track and identify specimens.
    • Inventories laboratory supplies and prepares reagents and solutions. Maintains and cleans laboratory equipment.
    • Review patient material as part of section quality assurance and participates in laboratory quality control processes. Evaluates new equipment, procedures and techniques and participates in implementation.
    • Assists in training new laboratory personnel and students.
    • Participates in quality assurance and CAP inspections.
    • Assist in modifying and/or developing new procedures
    High school diploma or equivalent. With required education, five years of Histology Technician experience.

    With Associate's degree, three years experience in histopathology within the last ten years under the supervision of a pathologist (certified by the American Board of Pathology in Anatomic Pathology, or eligible) or an appropriately certified medical scientist.

    With successful completion of a National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Science (NAACLS) accredited Histotechnician program, one year of required experience.

    Histology Technician (HT) certification with the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP).
