Essential Job Responsibilities:

  1. Fulfills patient care responsibilities for assigned physician and/or other areas as needed.
  2. Checks schedules and organizes patient flow. 
  3. Coordinates appointments for specific care and diagnostic procedures.
  4. Alerts physician/provider of any special needs the patient may have (e.g., interpretation services).
  5. Takes vital signs, including weight, height and blood pressure as needed.  Records vital signs in the patient's EHR.
  6. Accompanies patients to exam/procedure room, assists patients as needed with walking, transfers, dressing, collecting specimens, preparing for exam, etc.
  7. Assists physician/provider in examination of patients and gives instructions to patients as directed by the physician/provider.
  8. Enters any additional information as appropriate in EHR
  9. Adheres to all meaningful use workflows.
  10. Follows up with EHR tasks in an appropriate timeframe.
  11. Answers phone calls and takes messages for physician/provider. Returns patient phone calls as directed by the physician/provider and in accordance within 48 hours.
  12. Checks voice mail and tasks throughout the day for urgent messages.
  13. Obtains approval from the physician/provider for medication refills and notifies the pharmacy. 
  14. Administers injections as directed by the physician/provider.
  15. Notifies patients of test results as instructed by the physician/provider.
  16. Assures quality of care by maintaining clinic standards of care
  17. Communicates to appropriate staff any patient concerns, issues, etc.  Consults with the IT or Practice Manager about any system problems.
  18. Fulfills clerical responsibilities as assigned which may include:
    1. obtains lab/radiology reports, hospital notes, referral information, etc.
    2. completes forms/requisitions as needed
    3. schedules appointments
    4. requests prior authorizations as needed
    5. manages and updates charts to ensure that information is complete and filed appropriately
  19. Fulfills environmental responsibilities as assigned that may include:
    1. sets up exam rooms for patient care according to physician needs
    2. sets up instruments and equipment according to department protocols
    3. cleans exam rooms, procedure rooms, instruments and equipment between patient visits to maintain infection control
    4. orders, sorts, stores and checks for expiration dates on supplies and restock exam/procedure rooms
    5. ensures operation of medical equipment by following manufacturer's instructions, reporting malfunctions and requesting repairs
  20. Fulfills organizational responsibilities as assigned including:
    1. respects and promote patient rights
    2. responds appropriately to emergencies
    3. shares problems relating to patients and/or staff with Practice Manager
    4. works as a productive member of the team helping co-workers as needed and/or assigned
    5. provides coverage to other physicians or departments as needed
  21. Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications

Education:  High school diploma or general equivalency diploma (GED), medical assistant certification from an accredited institution preferred.

Experience:  Minimum one year of recent experience working in a medical facility as a medical assistant or any equivalent combination of experience, training, and/or education approved by the Clinical Operations Manager, Clinical Supervisor, and/or Human Resources.

  1. Knowledge of health care field and medical office protocols/procedures.
  2. Knowledge of HIPAA Privacy and Security rules.
  3. Knowledge of specific assisting tasks related to medical practice.
  4. Knowledge of information that must be conveyed to patients and families.

Skills:

  1. Skill in performing medical assistant tasks appropriately.
  2. Skill in tact and diplomacy in interpersonal interactions.
  3. Skill in understanding patient education needs by effectively sharing information with patients and families as directed by the physician.

Abilities:

  1. Ability to work in a team based environment that places patient satisfaction as the primary focus for measuring success.
  2. Ability to appropriately determine the urgency of a patient problem and communicate the information to the physician and/or management.
  3. Ability to learn and retain information regarding patient care procedures.

  7. Ability to work under pressure.

  10. Ability to plan, prioritize, and complete delegated tasks in an appropriate timeframe.
  11. Ability to demonstrate compassion and caring in dealing with others.

Equipment Operated: Standard ENT medical exam/office equipment,

Work Environment: Combination of medical office and exam/procedure room settings. Well-lit, well-ventilated, adequate space.

Mental/Physical Requirements:  Variety of walking, standing, sitting, bending, twisting, and reaching.  Must be able to use appropriate body mechanics techniques when making necessary patient transfers and helping patients with walking, dressing, etc.  Occasional need to lift, carry and/or move up to 50 pounds.  Ability to handle high levels of stress from dealing with many patients and staff.
