    Job Summary

    Under general direction and in compliance with standard operating procedures and policies, state-certified Law Enforcement Officer enforces the laws of the State of South Carolina, municipal codes as applicable, and federal laws as they apply for properties of the Greenville Health Authority. Performs all duties of a police officer. Applies problem- solving techniques in support of the Department's community policing philosophy and to protect life and property. Responds to calls for service, reports findings and takes appropriate action to resolve issues. Patrols assigned area. Assists with crime scene security and processing. Conducts follow up investigations. Investigates crimes and employs crime reduction/prevention techniques situationally. Supports prosecution of criminal cases. Acts as liaison between the Police Department and the campus community. Builds rapport with staff, patients, and visitors. Makes court appearances, serves warrants/subpoenas and places items into property and evidence. Investigates auto accidents; directs pedestrian and vehicular traffic as needed.
    NOTE: The Greenville Health Authority Police Department does not participate in the South Carolina Police Officer Retirement System (SC PORS). GHA Police Officers are offered a matching 457B plan provided through the relationship with Prisma Health as a retirement saving plan.

    Accountabilities

  • Patrol and Enforcement: Proactively patrols assigned areas to detect and apprehend criminal activity. Maintains a highly visible presence while on patrol as both a deterrent to criminal activity and an outreach to the general public. Conducts foot patrol of assigned areas, building positive community relations and providing a visual deterrent to criminal activity. Enforces all applicable laws as necessary in providing for the protection and security of the public and property of Prisma Health - Upstate. - 30%​
  • Investigating and Reporting: Investigates complaints and criminal activity to the fullest extent possible, interviewing available witnesses, victims and other participants. Collects physical and photographic evidence. Assists victims in the reporting process. Keep updated on recent criminal activity reported on (i.e. shift pass on, other shifts) Complete all reports and supplemental documentation accurately and in a timely manner. Reports and free of grammatical errors are clearly written. - 20%
  • Traffic Control and Enforcement: Responds to and investigate collisions as required. Performs traffic control and direction duties as needed in a safe and efficient manner. Actively performs enforcement of all State laws for traffic violations as appropriate. Self-initiates field activity and takes the appropriate enforcement action. Responds to citizen traffic complaints. Participates in traffic enforcement activities. - 10%
  • Communication: Ensure that communication with public is clear, professional and concise. Utilize proper radio etiquette and communicate clearly and effectively with dispatch and fellow officers. Maintain communication with supervisors when necessary and seek assistance when needed. Promptly return contact to all messages and regularly check communication from court offices. - 10%
  • Transports and Safety: Operates department vehicles in a safe manner at all times and with due regard to duties imposed by law. Maintains duty gear and other issued equipment in a safe and serviceable manner at all times and has necessary equipment when reporting for duty. Maintains sound officer safety practices in dealing with suspicious persons and handling suspects/prisoners. Reports unsafe conditions when observed. - 30%
  • Supervisory/Management Responsibilities

    This is a non-management job that will report to a supervisor, manager, director or executive.

    Minimum Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent - High School Diploma or GED
  • 2 years - Prior work experience
  • Required C ertifications/Registrations/Licenses

  • South Carolina Driver's License
  • South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy Class I Law Enforcement Officer Certification
  • South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy Class I Law Enforcement Officer Certification or formerly held a Law Enforcement Officer Certification from another state (with a break in service no more than three (3) years).
  • Knowle ​ dge, Skills, or Abilities

  • Certification through International Association of Hospital Security and Safety
  • Prior experience in the military/armed forces - Preferred
  • College level coursework in criminal justice - Preferred
  • South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy Law Enforcement Officer Certification
  • Required Knowledge & Skills

  • Basic computer skills including word processing
  • Knowledge of office equipment (fax/coper)
  • Mathematical skills
